In 1956, American endocrinologists Gregory Pincus and John Rock published the first clinical report concerning the use of oral steroid hormones to suppress ovulation. In 1960, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Enovid-10, the first commercially produced birth control pill. Within five years, some five million American women were using "the pill," as it came to be known. The invention of an effective contraceptive had moral ramifications for society and gave birthto the so-called "sexual revolution." Women's groups praised the pill for giving women control over their own bodies.
