The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything: A Novel

I had read that the first half was a bit tedious…
It is, however that is needed and sets up the rest in many ways! Just read until it gets going and you will be happy you took the time to do it right.

Fantastic
Love John D. MacDonald, but mostly have read Travis McGee books. If you haven't read them, please do. Most current writers consider MacDonald one of the greatest writers of our time, and McGee is so there demisional. But anyway, this book was so interesting and unlike his main stream books. Great read.

Different, mainly entertaining, but boring ending
Liike an episde of TV's Seinfeld - a story about nothing - but the yada yada yada of a few characters interesting in themseves.

The Girl, The Gold Watch & Everything
This is a very old, and very wonderful John D. McDonald story. A young man does not inherit his rich uncles considerable fortune, as he and everyone who knows the Uncle expects. He does inherit the problems which go with such a large estate, and a gold watch. The problems turned out to be more lethal than even his crafty Uncle expected. The watch is a huge old fashion pocket watch. And the poor nephew is left to learn that with this watch "time stops for one man", and that may cause as many problems as it solves. The Uncle told no one of his invention, and eventually instructed his nephew to tell no one. This is too dangerous a secret to share. But through solving problems, learning to use the watch, and meeting many people, the nephew learned to be smarter than that.I am so glad I found this book again, it is dated, but hey so is Agatha Christie and I love her too.

Reacquainting myself with an old friend
I hadn't read this book in at least a decade, but the passing time has only made it better. The plot is preposterous, lighthearted, and fairly simple. It's the characters and MacDonald's writing style that gives the work its considerable charm. And the icing on the cake is his cynical yet friendly take on humanity. A short, quick read, and well worth the time spent.

... I read it and it went down just as easily the second time
I devoured this book the first time I read it and it went down just as easily the second time. It's fantasy in more ways than one. It is by far JDM's best effort in science fiction. The idea of stopping (or incredibly slowing) time isn't new. H.G. Welles did it in his story, "The New Accelerator," but JDM infuses it with new life, to say the least. I always thought it opened a bit slow, but once it takes off, my eyes grab the text like sticky roller balls. The women are a bit more exaggerated than some of his less flamboyant creations, but I still have a fantasy crush on one of them.I've enjoyed many of JDM's other stand alone (non-Travis McGee) novels, but this was the first one I read and remains my favorite by a clear margin. I would certainly recommend others, though, such as Dead Low Tide, The Only Girl in the Game, Key to the Suite, and others.

This book seemed to be quite a departure for the my favorite writer, at the time
One of my all time favorites. I first read it a long, long time ago, when it and I were much younger. Back then I think I fell off my chair laughing a lot of the way through the book. These days I wear a seat belt. These old bones cant take falling off chairs. But I still nearly turned over the chairs from laughing so hard even though I knew what was coming. This book seemed to be quite a departure for the my favorite writer, at the time, John D McDonald, who wrote(and I read) a ton of mystery/suspense novels. Neither of a couple of TV adaptations of the book lived up to my expectations. I keep hoping someone will dig this up and do a really good movie. (Hey Steven Spielberg, this is your kind of stuff.) In the mean time, I'll read the book another time or two or three or four. Thanks, Amazon for finding it for me.

en un mundo en vías de descomposición
Un libro interesante, bien escrito, y sobre todo contiene una buena reflexión ética de lo que puede ser el comportamiento humano ante oportunidades de hacer trampa...

Still Worth Reading
It was a great read when I first read it more than 30 years ago. It is still a great read.
