Cargolux, the only freight charter airline of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, was formed in March 1970, by Loftliedir SA and Luxair, Luxembourg's national flag carrier. Cargo charters are now offered worldwide from Luxembourg, although the primary routes are to the Middle East, Far East, and the United States. Bold "Cargolux" titling in black lower-case lettering interrupts the cheatline on the forward fuselage, and the tail sports the company's distinctive "three box" motif in red outline. A small flag, representing the City of Luxembourg, adorns the tip of the fin. This artwork features one of the Cargolux fleet -- a Boeing 747-100F, better known to travelers throughout the world as the "Jumbo Jet." The majordifference between the 747F and the regular passenger 747 is the fact that the former aircraft has a hinged nose for freight loading. The Boeing 747 was the first of the "wide-body" jet transports and the largest airliner put into service at that time, with a wingspan of 195 feet 8 inches, a cabin 187 feet long, and accommodations for up to five hudnred passengers. It was the logical extrapolation of the Boeing 707 concept, the basis of the design being Boeing's project workto meet a United States Air Forece requirement for a large logistics transport.Pan American World Airways ordered twenty-five 747's in 1966, and on Janary 22,1970, the first of this new breed of aircraft entered service on Pan Am's New York-London route.
