Fun for the whole family! Okay, maybe not...
Silent Hill: Homecoming is the epitome of how a game in the survival horror genre should be played. The finite resources your character comes across (gun ammunition and health items), diversity of enemies, somewhat infrequent save points, and eerie story were all conscious inclusions made by the developing team which makes the game so fun to play. What I especially liked about Homecoming is the melee combat system. As you progress through the game you come across different weapons such as a knife, steel pipe, and axe. My immediate thought was to ditch the "weaker" weapon such as the knife for the "stronger" weapon such as the axe. What a mistake. Enemies in Homecoming all have different speeds, attack patterns, damage output, hits they can take etc, and it's your job as the player to decide what "tool" for the job you wish to use. If you want to mindlessly blast the enemy away with the shotgun or rifle, be prepared to pay for it later. Ammunition in Homecoming is a precious and finite resource that should only be used to take out stronger enemies in most (but not all) situations. Besides, it's much more satisfying to decapitate an enemy after a well fought battle than shooting them from far away. Right? No? Okay go back to playing Call of Duty kid...Some people might want to complain that the save points are too few and far between. Well, no duh. It's a survival horror folks, you can't just save the game every five minutes. Instead you need to cautiously battle enemies, collect precious med kits, solve puzzles, and pray that the next save point is around the corner. Silent Hill is all about creating a thrilling scary atmosphere and the mere sight of the "save symbol" should act as a relief toward the player. The last topic I'll touch on is the story. I won't reveal spoilers, or any of the plot for that matter. Instead I just want to say that it's compelling, includes a lot of foreshadowing, and overall makes you want to complete the game. Basically, it's the opposite of other survival horror games such as Dead Space. In Dead Space all I want to do is shoot stuff, the story is completely inconsequential.Overall, the only thing I would change about the game would be to include a 180 degree turn feature.

I love it because it plays alot like the first.
I suppose alot of people are picky with games in ways I do not understand. Of course, even if I did understand why, it would'nt change how I feel about this game. It's fun. It plays alot like Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3. 4, I don't know of. I never played it. I notice alot of people loved the games they played a few years to many years back and all the sudden they don't like them as much. Not me. I am one of those people who can still enjoy an old fasion 8-bit NES game to a newer game today for PS3 and XBOX 360. Once I like a game, It stays with me. I still have imagination and it is still as fun as it was when I was a kid. Thats what made alot of those older games fun. You equip the sword to your character and the game does not offer the visual, instead you create the visual of your characters sword with your imagination. Plus the reading factor of the games were good too. I became a good reader because of older games and libraries.Silent Hill Homecoming will give you pretty much the same game play as 1, 2 and 3 does. I have'nt noticed any thing different except for the story line of course. So if you want that same type of game play, I reccommend this game. The way I see this game like the other Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 is 1. You find the items and weapons you need. 2. There are puzzles with riddles you solve and 3. The combat and controls are pretty much the same.Of course you still have your disturbing monsters especially those nasty nurses. Could'nt be good ol' Silent Hill without the disturbing monsters. It's one of the many reasons I love the Silent Hill series.

Good horror game
Let me just say first that I did not play any previous Silent Hill games, but would really like to. But, I am, however a big horror fan.Story: The story in this game does NOT follow the movie, only some monsters are borrowed from that. You play Alex Shepard on his quest to return hoome and find his missing brother Joshua. The story has great twists and is very interesting, especially to people who enjoy a good psycological thriller. You can choose different diologue options when speaking to characters, but only 3 parts in the game actually determine which ending you get. It's worth mentioning the the notes you pick up in the game are worth reading.Graphics: This is a 2008 game. It looks decent, now. The mood and atmosphere is still great though. Excellent monster designs!!!Sound: Nothing to complain about. Monsters and voice acting are good.Gameplay: This is different from other Silent Hill games. You have a light attack, heavy attack, and a block. The combat in the game is good, you will find very few guns and ammo and will need to mostly use melee weapons. The enimies are tough and you don't want to leave them behind for fear they will catch up to you. The low ammo and health is what makes this game slightly scary sometimes. The combat can get repetitive and it is possible to mess up your entire game by using alot of healing items and then not having enough for certian parts of the game. That adds to scry factor, but doesn't make you too happy when it happens. Tip: keep multiple save files!!Boss fights are awesome and super demented! There is also alot of basic problem solving in the game, which is very enjoyable and should be familiar to anyone who has play survival horror games. I did find the puzzles to be an issue, though. They range from super easy to the most impossible thing ever. You could sit for an extremely long time trying to figure out the end puzzle, it is mostly impossible without a guide.Value: If you like horror it's definatly worth it for $20. There are different endings to unlock and for getting the different endings you get different costumes and weapons to use during the game. You also collect clild's drawings, serums, and pictures as collectables. There are no trophies on PS3. The drawings and pictures are nice to look at though for slight backstory and dementedness.Overall: Horror fan? Get this game. A good horror game, not the best, not the scariest, but very good.8/10
