Another C. J. Sansom historical thriller!
For those who love even one of the Matthew Shardlake books, featuring a hunchbacked detective mingling in themost privileged circles of power and money in l6th century England, this one is satisfyingly familiar, with thestory following Shardlake's investigations full of life and vitality, mystery and deception. The narrative moves smoothly, but what's new here is a fascinating attempt to thrust Shardlake into a rebellion of the people, a gradual hardeningof attitudes and forces to overthrow the aristocracy at all costs. Read it all! It's a wonderful book!

One of his best
Love shardlake so predisposed to a favorable review, but this one really was one of his best. My favorite is still Dissolution, but Tombland is a close second- especially the second half. Historically fascinating and with some modern parallels

Research looking for a home
I have enjoyed all of the Matthew Shardlake novels. This one is rather sprawling. The author has gathered and processed a ot of research. He shared more of it than necessary. Still good storytelling. I hope for another Matthew mystery, but with restraint.

Least favorite Shardlake novel
Too much Kett rebellion and solving the murder depends on an absolutely ridiculous coincidence. Need less history and a better plot.

Can't miss for fans
A huge epic. But it never bogged down!Filled with character-driven drama, as one would expect from CJ Sansom, I must admit to being brought to tears. The cruelty - I had to skip some pages. All these centuries later, we don't seem to have moved very far forward as a species.Entertaining and informative. A solid 7th in the series - CJ Sansom won't let you down!
