Adds confidence
The directions, photos and a rating for difficulty of described repair/maintenance improved my confidence to try or pass on a repair.

Challenges novices in a good way
This is a great book, but not a book for the novice. I'm a novice. What it did do, however, was familiarize me enough with my engine so when the guy came to repair it, I "knew" what he was talking about. And, I could stand around and nod my head when folks used words like "impeller." Can i repair an engine? Not yet. But with this book, and looking over someone's shoulder, I should be able to some day.The book talks about two stroke and four stroke engines, and for the novice, this can sometimes be confusing as they switch back and forth, and I was sometimes confused if they were talking about "my" engine or the other size engine. That's just me. I know that when I KNOW it won't matter, but for now... I wish there was one book for four stroke motors, and one for two stroke -- but no big deal.

Pictures are too dark
Good book of descriptions and instructions but the pictures are too dark. I have to go to the Internet or You Tube for better pictures. But I’m glad I bought it. Lots of good information.

Good for beginners
Is a nice book to know where to start with your motors. I bought it because I occasionally help my uncle finding motors parts to buy and most of the time I don’t even understand half of what he was trying to say. This book is awesome for people like me that don’t have any background on boats/motors; plus the illustrations are pretty good.

Soo Nice - I Bought 2
Nice General intro Book for out board motors. I bought this one based on reviews and am not disappointed. I have some mechanical knowledge- but bought my 1st boat a wanted to have some resource to go to- like the autos Chiltons. It's detailed enough to explain marine technology and operation. Lot of detailed photos. If you wanted to do any greater maintenance you'd need a Model specific Manual.

Reasonable book until you get to the troubleshooting
On the whole I thought this book was great but the troubleshooting section is hopeless. Not useful at all

Disappointing
If you have absolutely no idea about anything mechanical or anything at all about outboard motors perhaps this book would be worth a look. As a DIY How To book it doesn't get a passing grade. It isn't a realistic introduction to maintaining or repairing any motor.
