From Booklist Gr. 6-10. This short, four-chapter book in the long-running Need to Know Library series highlights concerns about binge drinking among teens, pointing out dangers inherent in drinking too much and being in situations where others are abusing alcohol. A hypothetical scenario (about young people in high school or college) heads each chapter. Then, using more fictional examples than statistics, the text addresses the seriousness of the problem and conveys some straightforward warnings about date rape and drugs, drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and other physical and emotional side effects of alcohol abuse. The final chapter about getting help teaches more about how to direct friends to recognize and curtail their drinking problem than it does about getting help for oneself. As with other books in the series, the sample stories, most of the advice, the photographs, the very short chapters, and the large-print text are geared to teens with reading difficulties. Suggest Teens and Alcohol on p.1517 to teens needing a more thorough book. Roger LeslieCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved Read more
