I feel like I am in a Chemistry Lab when I crush my wife's pills with this item. However, it is steel, and it is heavy. It easily crushes any pill, and I sometimes have 2 or three different meds in it a a time. It will not break, and will outlast all of us.The crushing bowl at first seemed a bit large to me, but after I crush pills, I mix them in applesauce, and the bowl is a good size for mixing.

This is a fantastic tool for pill crushing-and I've tried everything from the "silent knight" to handheld rotary crushers. I admit to being surprised at the utility of the mortar & pestle as I'd recently started using a ceramic unit we had around the house prior to buying this stainless one. The ceramic one was fine (better than the rotary crushers & silent knight) but being a bit doplik, I dropped the mortar one time too many and it broke. Also, the pill residue tended to collect to the bottom and it was difficult to dislodge (was largely not visible being white on white). This stainless mortar and pestle solves my problem of dropping and breaking the pestle but also, the pill residue is minimal and can be knocked out with delicate but targeted whacks to its side. It is easy to see whether there is pill residue (as compared to a ceramic unit) because of the contrast of steel to pill (white or light colored). I just wish I'd bought this first but discounted it thinking that modern technological solutions would be better than [a centuries old] manual solution. Silly me.There is a reviewer who goes willy-nilly reviewing stainless steel food grade products and debunks whether the items really are stainless, and as she can't get a razor blade to stick to them, gives the item low ratings as the products can't be stainless. To this reviewer and everybody else not knowing, there are several kinds of stainless. 304 Food Grade stainless steel -as this item is described right out of the chute- is NOT magnetic. There are several types of stainless and again, not all are magnetic. Imagine the havoc if all of your stainless products were magnetic -you'd ruin your knives and scissors, and could never get the simplest of household repairs done with all the other metal pieces in your environment sticking to the tools you're using. It is ridiculous that someone can write reviews with erroneous suppositions and their reviews be allowed to stand.

I grind a lot of pills for an aging parent who can't swallow medium and large pills anymore. I tried this after the ceramic burr grinder of 3 years became dull and stopped grinding.it takes about the same time to pound pills as it did to grind them. The mortar and grinder probably retained to same amount of the pills. The mortar is simpler and its efficiency probably won't degrade like the grinder did.4 stars because the product absolutely crushes pills as advertised.Not 5 stars because of cheap quality. Like other reviews said. It's just concrete poured into a thin metal mold with a super flimsy sliver of cover on the bottom.If your goal is to crush or pulverize pills and you don't care about style points, this will work for you.If you're looking for a high quality product, something that brings joy to your counter top, or something that scores style points while you crush pills, THIS IS NOT IT.

First of all, pill crushing has become essential for our extremely picky dog.Second, this mortar and pestle is perfect for the job. Both pieces are weighty and the milling is excellent. It's extremely easy to clean, and the stainless steel should last quite a long time without tarnishing or rusting in a meaningful capacity. It will probably eventually develop some spots, but for our intermittent use it's perfect.If I had a complaint, I wouldn't mind if the soft pad adhered to the bottom of the mortar was a little more centered. It seems like a small thing and doesn't detract from the functionality, but it sticks out a little at a funky angle and can't be repositioned without tearing it off and re-adhering it.

Super solid. Nice and heavy. I guarantee this will never break! Has not lost its looks since I got it. Looks clean and tidy and it is easy to clean and keep tidy.
