Jungian Dream Interpretation (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysts, 13)

A golden guide to Jungian dream interpretation
Readers new to Jungian analysis who are just starting a dream journal may find this book too concise and academic; the best "how-to" book on Jungian dream interpretation is Robert A. Johnson's Inner Work: Using Dreams & Active Imagination for Personal Growth. But for those like myself with considerable exposure to both Jungian analysis and dream journaling - or for clinical practitioners who want to sharpen their insight and review their understanding - this book is invaluable. I have never read a clearer summary of the basic concepts of Jungian psychology than is provided by the first chapter, and subsequent chapters skillfully weave together theory with clinical observation and examples in discussion of such subjects as ego-images and complexes in dreams, common dream motifs, the dream frame, symbolism in alchemy, dreams and individuation, and the two tensions in dream interpretation. For clinicians, the chapters on the nature of dreaming, dreams as diagnostic tools, and questions of technique will be particularly useful. Using the understanding provided by this book, I have been able to interpret recent dreams more effectively and revisit older dreams to expose new layers of meaning. My only slight disappointment was the chapter on common dream motifs, which was much too abbreviated to sate my interest - but then I am sure Dr. Hall made it that way on purpose so as not to succumb to archetypal reductionism. Above all else, this book is a supreme feat of writing alchemy, reducing a huge mother-lode of Jungian thought to a rich, clear vein of pure gold.

Jungian Dream Study
The only kind of Dream interpretation books I will buy are within the Jungian school of thought. I recognize this author's name from other books within this school of thought. Of course, the work blends in with other Jungian-type studies.

A Wonderful Introduction of Jungian Dream Analysis
This book is a wonderful introduction to Jungian dream interpretation and analysis. It is a good companion to the actual Jungian writings in Volume VIII of the Collected Works. I am impressed particularly by Hall's summary of the process of alchemy and Jung's application of this chemical practice to psychology. I look forward to reading the relevant volumes of the Collected Works this summer. Still, Hall's distillation is a great start in this aspect of psychoanalysis.

I was hoping...
...it would have more examples of what particular subjects mean when they are dreamt about. It doesn't!

Good for Advanced Students
This is a clear presentation of Jungian Dream interpretation, but it is designed for the therapist, so the less advanced reader may not know some of the major ideas. Nevertheless it is clearly and logically presented and is without flights of fancy, so it has its own value.

It may be short but it's very much to the point.
A superb and thorough approach to dream interpretation. It may be short but it's very much to the point. If you are looking for a book that gives a list of dream symbols etc and what they mean, this is not the book, though, as this delves into method rather than listing meanings. For that I would recommend Tom Chetwynd's Dictionary for Dreamers (and his other books on symbols) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dictionary-Dreamers-Tom-Chetwynd/dp/0586081593/

Excellent summary of Classical Jungian Ideas.
A great, succinct collection scoping Jungian attitudes to the function of dreaming. He has a light, thoughtful style. The 'handbook' feel adds a note of practicality. I liked the re-caps.
