Very easy install
I am not handy. It took me less than 5 minutes from opening to having it installed and fully working. Yes you can get a universal keypad.I have had the Craftsman and the universal. To me the Craftsman is better made and lasts longer. You get what you pay for.

TIP IN CASE YOU’RE HAVING TROUBLE PROGRAMMING THIS UNIT
IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE PROGRAMMING YOURS, this is what I did. I followed all the instructions five times and the unit wouldn’t respond with the “flashing lights or clicks” to let you know it’s accepted the code. The instructions tell you to hit the “LEARN” button on your garage door unit AFTER all the steps on the keypad. Just out of frustration, on my sixth attempt, I said “what the heck” and started the process by hitting the LEARN button FIRST! So to summarize what I did was; 1) PRESS AND RELEASE LEARN BUTTON ON GARAGE DOOR OPENING UNIT. 2) hold the * and # button at the same time until the lights STOP blinking. 3) Enter desired 4 digit PIN and hit ENTER. 4) Press ENTER for the number of times required for the color of your learn button (the directions will tell you how many for which color) and then press “0”. 5) Test out your unit by entering your 4 digit code and hitting ENTER. If you try this and it still doesn’t work, then press and release the LEARN button after step 3 listed here, and proceed with the rest from there. Anyways, after finally getting mine installed, it works great, like it did when the original was installed with the original Craftsman 3/4 hp opener 8 years ago. Good product, I hope I get another 8 years out of this one. But having to go “off script” and figure it out on my own is the reason I’m giving it 4* instead of 5*. But I have a Craftsman opener unit and wanted to replace it with an OEM Craftsman keypad. It’s more expensive but when it’s below freezing out, or pouring rain, you don’t want your wife or your mother or kids to not be able to get in to the garage.

Worked on 2 Doors
Product worked out of the box according to simple to follow instructions. Product has some nice features like it can handle multiple doors since it can store 20+ codes. It can also store quite a few temporary codes that are active with a timer or number of uses - your choice. As compared to my original Craftsman from 20 years ago, the construction of the remote is less weather resistant. The closing lid doesn't cover the remote fully on the bottom. Thus water could seep into battery compartment. Also the top part of closing cover doesn't cover the top well from rain. There is a good gap that can allow water to get in and get to keypad. I am a design engineer and the cover is not well engineered. The cover attachment mechanism is very cheap and I expect it to break. In fact, just after putting battery inside, the cover fell off and I had to snap it back into place. The cover engagement pieces are small and not strong. Due to this, don't let sun or rain get to this unit. I might engineer a cover to put over this remote which defeats the point of having a cover. It would not have cost much to design and implement a better cover. Another negative is the battery cover. You have press pretty hard to disengage the plastic catch. I can see this breaking if not careful. My old remote was designed nicely. The battery cover slide over and a small screw held it in place. No need to press hard on plastic to remove. Again a subpar design and implementation to save a few cents. Quality of cover and case was not a priority it seems. Hopefully the unit works reliably and for years to come. My old unit gave up after 26 years. That was quality.

Simple Programming with Craftsman Opener
I haven't used this much but I replaced a craftsman 315 model that had a broken lid so this was the newer version. Installation on the wall was simple and just like the old unit and programming was simple if you just follow the directions, It took me one time to program it correctly. My only complaint is this unit has a green/Yellow illumination vs the craftsman 315 model had a red illumination which i prefer.

The remote was easy to mount and works as expected. The programming was not the easiest and took multiple attempts trying different methods. People's feedback on how to program it in other reviews was very helpful. Thanks! Otherwise works great.

The product works great for the price but if you are having trouble setting up be sure to click the learn button on the garage opener unit before setting up the keypad!!
