A parody of star trek ,or so they say
Running at 3 seasons it takes a like at the star trek franchise with quite a few guest actors and actresses taking guest spots including the person's who playedCassidy yates.... Deep space 9 Dr phlox...........enterpriseDr zimmerman.voyagerDianna troi.......next genSome of the characters in the show are very similar to star trekIssac....dataBortus...worfThe union of planets ..is clearly the federation and the fleet is obviously star fleetThe enemy or main enemy in season 2, are the kaylons, a robotic anti biotic race and the same asIsaac, who is sent to the Orville to understand humansThe kaylons also and wait for it are possibly the same as the role of the cyclone in battlestar galacticaLate 1970a where reptilian race created the cylon centurions thousands of years before they came into contact with the colonies, in this case the cylon robots over three the reptilian masters and wiped them out, the connection here is that the humanoids who created the kaylons were also exterminated ,by the roboticKaylons, they have have no physical similarities to the cylon s but the premise is the same. The other enemyAre the krill nearly similar to the jem hadar deep space 9. In an early episode season 2The union fleet is being slaughtered by the kaylons, and is only saved by the krill you see the kaylons as a common threat, funnily enough this scene is very similar to the one where captain sisko is trying to recapture deep space 9 ,and is saved by the klingons when siskos fleet is taking a beatingThe captain of the Orville is ed Mercer a previously fast promoting union officer who went into freefallWhen he found his wife in bed with a blue alien on heat, also on the bridge is joined ex wiife and exec, who got Mercer the command of the ship, after feeling guilty. For her actions they sort things out and they get on great, also There's the brilliant pilot and the young security chief from a planet whose gravity is about 6 times of earthAnd is like superwoman but can't fly, but she hurls bad guys across the room and so onBeing American made there is a episode where Isaac is racially abused and hated by some of the crew because his spieces nearly wiped union the bit where he saved the union really doesn't come into it he gets to commit suicide but is saved by the chief engineer, who ever heard of a robot trying kill himself, also the ships doctor were in a relationship with a robot, yes don't go there, there's a race which is also clearly same sex, in this make and anti women and the males mocluns reproduce by laying on its egg ,when the baby turns out to be a girl there's uproar because the mocluns only have boys and they correct the procedure by turning the girl into a boy, in total disgust to the union crew, the series is very good and in cases funny, but if your sensitive to racism, bigotry, homophobia, anti moclun women then be advised. its there. also there's gelatinous crew member with an attitude, and a bigoted navigator who hates issac

A REAL TREAT FOR MOST WHO HAVE YET TO DISCOVER
Again 400 years into the future, aboard starship The Orville captained by Seth MacFarlane's Captain Ed Mercer. Its mission is largely to seek and assess hitherto undiscovered planets. The three hundred on board reflect some of the lifeforms encountered, appearances often startling but (mainly) all living in harmony. This is Seth MacFarlane's creation - he not only the star, but often writing and directing. His influence is everywhere - mischievously parodying other offerings in the genre but also masterminding scripts that are far more than at first seems. Some of those planets visited contain attitudes to be deplored (genocide; slavery; machines in danger of taking over; females regarded as inferior - if tolerated at all). In fact thoughts are provoked about our own planet's record on these and other matters.Special effects are terrific, including an area on board where one can request simulations of programmed times and places - ideal therapy for those feeling the strain.Critics have been sniffy, viewers full of praise. Episodes are inventive, frequently heading in unexpected directions. Often there is excitement - enemies most formidable, threat of danger real. Some are surprisingly moving. Others ingeniously interweave matters most serious with moments hilarious. A fine cast helps make it all work. Fans will have their favourites, robot Isaac no doubt often high on the list.Season 1 was great. For much of the way Season 2 is even more so. (Fans will make up their own minds about the final two episodes, they for some perhaps not quite in the same league.)Thanks go to all involved for so many hours of enjoyment. Thanks also to the enthusiastic reviewers alerting me to a show otherwise missed.

Brilliant series but one disk has issues
I love The Orville but watching season 2 a second time I find disk 4 has issues. About 10 minutes or so in episode 12 has a white haze appearing on top of the image for a few seconds then it keeps disappearing and coming back. The disk is clean, no marks so maybe it's dvd rot setting in. I only bought it in Nov 2020 so less than a year old but I find nowhere on here to get it exchanged so I will have to buy it elsewhere. WH Smith have seasons 1 & 2 boxed set so I'm going for that. At least with them I can take it back and get it swapped. Not so with amazon. 5 stars for the series. It's not dvd rot. The disk looks OK and I have the same issue with the set from WH Smith. I searched online and found reviews on amazon.ca stating that there is a production issue. It seems to vary but most people seem to have issues with disk 4, season 1 or 2. So this second set is going back.

Emotions Jim, But Not As We know IT!
I reviewed series one and as a self proclaimed 'trekker', loved it's nod to the 'Original Series' of Star Trek and it's episodic nature while still incorporating the Seth MacFarlane irreverence of 'Family Guy'. You can see glimpses of that irreverence in Series 2 but (and I'm halfway through, so I could stand corrected), aside from cameos of Star Trek alumni and following the canon formula, it seems to me, to be getting a bit too focussed on relationships and the accompanying emotions. The Captain falling for a surgically altered enemy and a main character 'losing her strength' so she has to leave the series, sorry, the 'crew'. It just seems like story and action is being sacrificed for feelings and their consequences, so while I still think this is a good series, I also think it needs to vastly improve in the story department and not start to rely on whether Captain Mercer is worried if his ex-wife will put up with his petty jealousy or choice of a new partner. Can you imagine Captain Kirk worrying if Spock likes his choice of Orion Slave Girl? Less touchy feely, more 'arm photon torpedoes' please Mr. MacFarlane! Other than that, it's still a good show and if series three ever gets the nod, I'd buy that too.
