There are 2 slight problems with the design/quality of this item. First, if you allow the cable to retract to quickly it will compress the spring and lockup. Second, if you pickup the unit by the spring/cable side, the spring will pull out and need to be re-inserted (not a simple task) This can be prevented by putting a short 'set' screw though each plastic collar that contains the spring.

I always wanted them to buy some kind of safety line like this but they just ignored me so I was thrilled to get this.This lifeline is a fall arrester. In the event of a fall, it brakes so the fall is arrested. And because it has tension at all times, it brakes very quickly. You can test this just holding the device in you hands and yanking on the line.These are designed to be used with a harness and there are plenty available. It's made of a very strong webbing and the carabiner style hook is heavy duty. You must hook it to some sort of an anchor, which will be different depending upon your particular location. This one is 6FT long but Peakwoorks has longer ones available on the same page and my husband is going to order a longer one, too, for some tasks where he cannot put an anchor within 6 FT.My husband tried it out the other day when he was replacing a rotted board on the eaves of the top story of the house. He was on a ladder but he had the harness on and this lifeline attached and when he finished and came down, he admitted that it made him feel much safer and more secure. Hallelujah! No one is working on my house again without one of these on ever again and I'll sleep a lot better.

I have finally gained the confidence I needed to get up and scrape and paint my dormer eaves. All that overhead work with two hands on a ladder? I was actually going to buy a ~$10k scissor jack just for that, but this simpler route brought me to my senses (plus, I don't really want to store a scissor jack, although I'd still love to have one).So paired with my Peakworks body harness, I was comfortable enough to do the job. I always told myself I didn't mind the pain of all that working in weird positions on a ladder, but I was just concerned for my safety. And that's the truth.You don't get a wide freedom of movement with 6', but if you plan it well, that's plenty for working on a house. In fact, you wouldn't want much more or you would have other issues to worry about. This is also a better setup than I realized was available for working on the house (in the past, I had used some different types for climbing microwave).It is very confidence inspiring to hear, per the product page, that this is made in Germany. Some places just aren't known for their regard for human life, and I don't want to trust my life and limb to just anyone.

I'm an old guy who sometimes goes on my roof. I know I'm tempting fate each time I do it and so I finally listened to the advice of almost everyone who knows I do this. I've installed anchors, have a harness, and now I have an amazing safety line. This is an incredibly sturdy unit and I completely trust it would easily hold me should I fall. I have the 6ft unit. One nice feature is the centrifugal breaking system, like a seatbelt in a car. The webbing and the clips are very heavy-duty and will easily hold an elephant, maybe two. The best feature is that it's self-retracting so it always has tension on it which makes me feel safer and tells me it's working. If I fall, this is absolutely going to save me and my family a lot of pain and grief. I should have had something like this years ago.

These are now fairly common in commercial use but I don't see them used often in DIY. This is 14' model + 3' clearance means it. An only be used when the fall path is free at least 17' plus the height of the person from toe to harness anchor point (about 4'is typical). So I'm.using 20-21'. That's about perfect for two story scaffold ... Will vary. Pretty basic. As designed it should.triggwr at 10" to 12" free fall.These are single use. So if engaged it should be disposed off or sent back to manufacturer.

I really recommend this product for boom lift applications.It allows full travel within your work basket, but the firm retraction keeps you securely retained in the event of unexpected movement.Please be prepared to adjust to the retraction force, which is about 5 to 10 pounds. Yes, it is a bit obnoxious, but the increase in safety factor that it provides is well worth it in my opinion.I regularly work in a Z60/34 boom lift, and this product keeps me securely latched to it.When testing the retractor stop before use, please hold above the fall indicator stitching, which is a little stitched Z fold, and grip directly on the nylon lanyard. As the intention is to test the internal locking mechanism of the retractor pack, and not the fall indicator stitching. You could possibly tear the fall indicator stitching open if you were to do this from the main metal attachment clip on the regular, so I don't recommend that.In this modern age, materials and technology have advanced sooo far! Retractable lanyards are the new cutting edge of fall protection safety, and I recommend this product to anyone looking to up their game.

Solidly built, so far happy with it

I repurposed this dual fall arrester as a dog safety belt for my Jeep. Allows movement in the back without any slack so the dogs have less movement under hard braking or a collision. These are hooked to a car rated dog harness. It also prevent the dogs from jumping out of my Wrangler when the top is down.
