Judy Holiday & Dean Martin at their Comedic Height!
Funny funny! Great musical from the 50's! Best moment; Judy wants to go to the races; best musical scene; "Drop that Name!".

Welcome to "Susanswerphone"
The last great MGM musical from Arthur Freed and Vincente Minnelli, BELLS ARE RINGING is a wonderful reminder from stars Judy Holliday and Dean Martin, in CinemaScope and Metrocolor, with great songs like "The Party's Over" and "Just in Time," of what the world used to be like before telephones became mobile and took over our lives!

Great Musical! Fun story!
First of all, the best part of the movie is Judy Holliday. She is so good and so funny in all the movies that I have seen her in. Born Yesterday is perhaps my favorite, but It Should Happen To You is also hilarious.Dean Martin does a good job playing the love interest for her, and of course he has a fantastic voice. The main setting for this movie is an answering service, back when phone lines had to be connected by a telephone operator. The opening scene shows Judy Holiday meeting the many challenges of her job, and switching her voice to fit the different phone lines that she is taking messages for.The fun comes in when Judy Holliday's character gets involved in the lives of the answering service subscribers. Unfortunately for her, there are two cops watching their business and spying on them (they think that they are either selling drugs or a "lonely hearts club", when they really are a legitimate answering service). Unbeknownst to the innocent gals who operate the answering service, they are being used by a bookie operation, under the disguise of taking orders for a record company, to communicate racing bets. In the end, Judy Holiday saves the day with her innocence by changing some "record orders" because Beethoven didn't write that many symphonies, and the cops come in just in time to arrest the bookies. In order to help make other's lives better, Judy's character has disguised herself when talking to them, so of course, Dean Martin's character thinks that she is someone else, and after he proposes to her, she disappears thinking that he is in love with a girl who doesn't exist, vowing to leave forever and not come back. Of course, there has to be a happy ending, and the story ends with the two lovers together again. The only part I don't like about his movie is one of the songs, "The Midas Touch" which is really not very good, however, it is part of the storyline because it is written by a dentist! So, I think they made it annoying on purpose. Other than that, Bells Are Ringing has a fantastic score with a fun and unusual storyline. The DVD came with some great extras, which included a couple of deleted scenes. :) A nice touch! Overall, I would highly recommend it to any musical fans!

"Why oh why can't the next call be mine?"
The Comden/Greene musical comedy, BELLS ARE RINGING opened on Broadway in late 1956 and ran for 924 performances. Judy Holliday reprises her starring role in this 1960 screen adaptation. Other stage cast members also appear.SYNOPSIS--Ella Peterson (Holliday) is a nosy answering service operator who gets involved in her clients' personal lives. She uses a different identity and voice when speaking with each and offers them unsolicited advice.Ella knows that playwright Jeff Moss (Martin) has writer's block and sleeps away his days. She goes to his apartment as "Melisande Scott" and motivates Jeff to begin his new play "The Midas Touch." A romance results. Another service client is an actor (Gorshin) who can't get work because of his shabby wardrobe. Ella dons a beatnik disguise and convinces this Brando soundalike to buy a suit. She also helps a would-be songwriter dentist to compose a hit tune.Ella's cousin Sue (Stapleton) owns "Susanswerphone." She's unaware that her charming European boyfriend Otto (Foy) is running a bookie operation right out of her own office. Two gangsters come looking for Otto when Ella accidentally botches some large bets that she thinks are record orders.Miss Holliday is outstanding here, Dino is handsome and charming, Stapleton plays her character straight and Gorshin's Brando imitation is spot-on. Watch for Hal Linden (aka " Barney Miller ") and chorines singing "The Midas Touch."Related item:The BELLS ARE RINGING movie soundtrack CD is also available.Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 IMDb viewer poll rating.(6.9) Bells Are Ringing (1960) - Judy Holliday/Dean Martin/Fred Clark/Eddie Foy Jr./Jean Stapleton/Ruth Storey/Frank Gorshin/Gerry Mulligan (uncredited: Donna Douglas/Phil Arnold /Hal Linden)

colorful
Thank you Warner Archive, to give us the possibility to see this Movie in all it's technicolor glory. It runs in Region 2 as well, wich is fantastic since some films are nearly impossible to find here because they had never been out on DVD or VHS over here. I am very happy to see, that the artistry of actors like Judy Holiday (or others) are now kept and preserved for years to come and generations to enjoy!

Ultimo film di Judy holliday
chi non ha rimpianto questa attrice intelligente e spiritosa, morta troppo presto ? Purtroppo è una fiacca commedia musicale, tirata avanti stancamente.
