Q: Can you machine wash the gloves

These gloves are leather. I wouldn’t wash anything made of leather in the washing machine. Wipe with a damp cloth perhaps.

No they're not thermal, but they are good quality, tough and durable.

Q: Thorns, brambles, barbed wire, glass - would these gloves be adequate for this?

These are excellent gloves. Brambles and thorns and tough gardening work=no problem. But glass? Not sure. And barbed wire? Not sure about that, too. I can tell you that the two pairs we have are very strong and durable. Thorns and brambles are simply not a problem at all.
