Exceptionally Useful
As tax books go, it is rare to find one that is as useful as this one. Mind you, the edition I finished is not up to date for the TCJA and you should check versioning carefully. Having said that, the format of examples, explanations and coverage of the law is second to none. A great resource and one that will undoubtedly help the tax law student!

ok
This book is pretty good but a bit too long. I think Fed Inc Tax is pretty simple and clear but I have been working since I was 12 and have been doing my own taxes before law school for 10 years. Maybe some younger students who have never been exposed to this stuff in the real world will need a little more time to absorb it. I found the chapters tedious. One thing that would be really helpful is to read this with an actual 1040 form in front of you. You can download Obama's from the internet if you don't have your own.

You'd be fine to go with the older version
You'd be fine to go with the older version. But this is a well written primer, one of the few books that has value outside of law school and outside of that area if you are not specializing in it.

The book does a great job of breaking down some concepts
I bought this supplement as an aid for my Federal Income Tax course and finally the Professor began to make some sense to me! The book does a great job of breaking down some concepts, but I only gave 4 stars because there are instances where it presupposes that the reader has a deeper knowledge of the topic than may be true. Overall, highly recommended!

An Above Average E&E
A pretty good volume in the E&E series. The introductory chapters are excellent. The book does suffer from a bit from stylistic changes (likely a result of having three authors parenting this child) but a solid volume nonetheless. If you are clueless about tax, this will help. But be sure to get the latest edition as tax law changes subtlety and frequently.

This book got me an A.
I struggled all semester long with Tax I. I purchased Examples and Explanations because I'd had good experiences with other topics before. As soon as I started reading the E&E along with my class assignments (or in place of them), it all came together. It offers some concrete explanations and then provides questions with great factual variations. My exam was multiple choice, so the E&E material was perfect preparation. Seriously, how could ~$35 not be a great investment when it returns an A? Buy this book.

For those of you that are totally lost in Fed Tax
I never was a huge fan of E&E books, but this one is absolutely essential if you're completely lost in Fed Tax. Bankman writes a fairly popular Fed Tax casebook and if you happen to get assigned it, this E&E should be a must-buy. It really breaks down the unbearable maze that is the Internal Revenue Code and backs it up with great problems that ACTUALLY have explained solutions.
