True Industrical Switch - fyi, ATEN is IOGEAR
First off some may not recognize the ATEN brand and may assume it's just some other cheap knockoff devices, but ATEN is the IOGEAR parent company that many of you may be familiar with as being sold in retail stores for decades now and have a pretty good track record of reliability.I needed a usb 3 switch that I could control via rs232 for a multi-gpu/multiusb passthrough VMWARE server that uses an external touch screen that selects the gpu and usb card outputs to feed the control console via custom serial control scripts to a rs232 hdmi switcher and this rs232 usb switcher, a standard KVM would not suffice as the hdmi switcher is an 8x8 matrix style that also sends monitor feeds to other passive displays as needed on the fly. This is the only switch I could find that would do the job for this installation, and it has been working well with no hiccups such as dropping any of the usb peripherals connected when switched nor have issues responding to the 232 inputs constantly. It also has a physical remote switch as well which is great, I love that it connects via a standard minijack (3 ring), although I would have preferred for it to be a 3.5mm not a 2.5mm solely due to availability of 3.5mm cable selections when extending the feed out of the server room using keystone jacks, I ran the switch as a manual selector backup and had you do some adapting to run the extension, but it did work.Otherwise transfer speeds of usb 3.0 sticks have not suffered when being passed through the hub nor have frame rates of the web cam on one of the 4 front ports. The casing is all metal and the unit is very heavy. Extremely well built, although it is a little expensive it is a device for professional custom installations and for my use case the price was reasonable. For a homelab setup it may be a bit on the pricier side if the rs232 control isn't needed, or a standard kvm would suffice.Highly recommended if you actually have a use-case for something like this.
