KIWANUKA

This soulful album arrived well packaged from the UK. I could not find it in the US, so this is a real treat.

I enjoyed both of his previous albums, but on this fine 3rd album he really seems to have found his stride, creating a masterful panoramic wide ranging album. It hangs together well as a complex enchanting whole album, and is best listened to as a whole in its entirety, rather than cherry picking individual tracks.The arrangements are complex, reminiscent of great soul performers like Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye or Isaac Hayes, and with a social commentary message that he wants to impart. No expense has been spared on expansive arrangements, with multi backing choir vocals, sumptuous string arrangements, harp, piano, synthesisers etc making for very full orchestration, for which the producers Danger Mouse and Richard Woodcroft deserve much credit. At times everything but the kitchen sink seems to be thrown into the mix, but it still all hangs together well. There are a couple of Interlude instrumental tracks that link things that also work fine.Michaels singing throughout is strong, to the front of the mix, assured ,and passionate, he is in distinctive spine tingling soulful voice. I am surprised that there have been relatively few reviews so far, compared to his previous 2 albums, as for me he is really hitting the pinnacle of his work to date on this new album. It is melodic throughout, every listen reveals more subtleties, it is a record that repays repeated listening, and is a fascinating soundscape to wallow in, it feels very immersive. It seems to have garnered good end of year reviews from a variety of sources, from BBC 6 Music, Mojo and Uncut magazines, and is a tour de force that deserves to be listened to and acclaimed. One of my top 10 albums of this year.

this is not the usual style of music for me to buy, but I like different things and am not a one track pony when it comes to music. Not that jazzy as described by some, but I guess at least one or two of the tracks are. Like most of them, but not keen on the hero one.. I also didn't notice any quotations in the lyrics on god as others have said. Great different style you can not deny he is talented. I may even try an earlier album of his. Arrived in good time but for some reason was not available to download immediately.This album is a brilliantly eclectic mix of pop, funk, jazz fusion, soul and rock music. It is interesting that Kiwanuka often contributes four parts including the vocals and some percussion on much of the record. He is adept at altering his voice based on the mood and cadence. He seems to have a great relationship with his musicians and the string arrangements feel naturally complementary rather than just additions for the effect. Excellent Production by Dangermouse and brilliant Recording Engineering gives the record an older late Motown feel married to a 21st Century soundscape. The tracks flow into one another giving this album a connected, storyteller dynamic. This is clearly a nod to Marvin Gaye's timeless 1971 tour de force but it is very effective and enchanting. As a Stevie Wonder fan (particularly his Classic Period) I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of sounds on this record. Clearly, the present day advantage of multiple layering, computer editing etc. makes the process of creating a 'masterpiece' much simpler. Thoroughly recommended and one of my favourite albums of the last decade!

I can't across the album during lockdown. I don't listen to it regularly but It's possibly one of my favourite albums especially when I'm not sure what to listen to.I have MK's first album which I also enjoy but not as much as Kiwanuka. His collaboration with Danger Mouse on this album truly enhances the soul in his voice and sound.

This is a wonderful album of beautiful music from Michael Kiwanuka. It is best listened to in one sitting as the tracks blend into each other to produce to an amorphous piece of work where the lyrical and musical themes weave in and out. Similar to Kiwanuka's earlier works, this is both nostalgic of a former era (1970's Philly maybe) and at the same time is new and vibrant and modern. The textured sound includes jazz, world and soul influences that are reminiscent of Kamashi Washinton, the vocals are powerful and the songs are wonderful. The vinyl edition comes in a high quality gatefold sleeve that is guaranteed to turn the hipster dial up to 11 for anyone who has this in their collection.This is the best one yet from Michael Kiwanuka and could well be the breakthrough album. It deserves to be massive.

Llegó muy bien protegido. Inmediatamente lo probé y no tuvo ningún problema. No podría decidir cuál es mi álbum favorito de Michael Kiwanuka, pero, sin duda esta es una OBRA MAESTRA. Desde canciones con ritmos más "movidos" hasta las devastadoras como Piano Joint This Kind of Love y Hard to Say Goodbye. No sé qué hay en el corazón de Kiwanuka para poder haber creado estar álbum, pero estoy feliz de que algo así exista <3
