Hard boiled softies egg-shaped critters may look soft, but they're hard enough to stand up to the most aggressive chewers. The secret to their surprising sturdiness is a thick, durable rubber shell under their soft plush exterior. Includes a loud squeaker yolk for extra fun.

Disapointing....at first
I have a powerful chewer and I purchased this based on the reviews talking about how durable it is. Not so much, in my experience. It lasted about 12 hours with my pup.It was, surprisingly, not the cloth cover which failed but, rather, the squeaker which he tore out of the "hard rubber egg." I was surprised, to say the least. "Disappointed" would also describe my reaction.***Update*** The cloth cover failed two days later but the "egg" has made a surprising second life all on its own. With the broken squeaker inside, acting as a sort of "rattle," the thing is kind of like a heavy duty "dog football." My boy loves this thing and I often find him trotting up to me, barely able to get his maw around it and wanting me to throw it for him. With its "egg shape" it always bounces in an unpredictable way too. Amazingly fun but not in the way the manufacturer intended. I bump it up one star

Huey The Hedgehog is Dead -- Long Live Huey The Hedgehog
The evil mini-Dachshund ripped apart the outer sleeve -- the Huey part -- in under 15 minutes, but the egg shaped squeaky thing seems to be able to take some abuse. She naps on towels, because she's ripped apart every dog bed she's ever had. (Oddly enough, she respects the toys and beds of the other dogs.) Other than a couple small plastic balls she likes, this is the first toy she likes to play with and hasn't destroyed. The outer cute animal was not long for this world, and we're left with a plain blue oval thing, but she's entertained and occasionally wears herself out -- and that's helpful. We were able to give her something for Christmas which wasn't almost instantly worthless or treats. (If you can't beat them... and who beats a cute little baby evil dachshund ... join 'em was always the thought, and so -- treats.)I doubt the soft outer core will last long for any determined dog and so if that's your goal, I can only wish you luck. I still dream of her having something cute and fluffy, but the truth is that her fun is in putting a smack-down on her toys. I'd love to see this inner core in all sorts of wacky and fun colors, but as long as she's doing something and I don't feel like I could have just burned the money spent for all the good it did, then I'm happy.4 stars because the hedgehog was eviscerated under the Christmas tree, on the most sacred of Christian holidays, in the year of our Lord, 2011, but all was far from lost. Should I extrapolate something from it looking like a giant Easter egg? Nah. All I do know is that, while Huey has in one sense went on to his reward, Violet -- AKA Violence -- still plays on, and that's as much as I can expect and more than I usually get.

Small Basenji is death to toys...
I had high hopes for this toy. When it arrived, I regretted getting the large size because my little Basenji (20lbs) seemed to struggle to chew it. Then she went into a frenzy, attacking the head and squeezing the ball out of the hedgehog's bottom. I restuffed the ball into the hedgehog's bottom (OK, that just sounds plain odd...) and gave it back to her. Within 30 seconds she had again de-balled the hedgehog, and after another minute had destroyed the squeaker and was working to ingest the ball.I really don't know what to do with this dog for toys. She loves them, and is meticulous about never chewing something that is not hers, but when given a toy, they never last. She digs out squeakers and removes stuffing. Nyla bones last the longest, but she really loves the softer toys. The 12 squeaker snake was a hit for an hour. By then she had removed all the squeakers and the stuffing. I threw them away and she dragged the shredded snake around for a couple of days. The hard talking balls work well for an afternoon or so.So, based on the history, I can't ding this toy to much because this small dog is death to toys. Suggestions greatly encouraged!

Love this toy.
Our dog is a year old this week. She a shepard/doberman mix and weighs 66 lbs and growing. She has had a Hard Boiled Sheep for about 7 months now. I had purchased another Kyjen toy and she totaled it in less then 24 hours. I wrote to Kyjen explaining I did not expect a toy to last forever, but I did think it should last more than 24 hours. They sent me a lovely email the next day apologizing and asked if I would take a replacement of their choosing. I said yes and they sent me the Hard Boiled Sheep. To say my dog loves it would be an understatement. She plays with it numerous times every day.She loves to lay on her back and make it squeak. I love the fact I can wash the outer cover and then she can give it a good chewing work out and it still looks almost like new. I got two of the Hedge Hogs for Christmas presents this year. One for our dog and one for my daughters dog.Our dog now alternates between the two toys and could not be happier. I just ordered another one tonight for our dogs sister, since she it is her birthday too. I got another Hedge Hog ( good dirt color) I know she will have lots of fun with it and it will last unlike other toys I have purchased. I would highly recommend this toy.

Squeaker dies early
I like this toy. So does my 5 month old Alaskan malamute pup. She's 32 pounds, and not an aggressive chewer, but loves to "shake and kill". She also has a tendency to eat stuffing and fabric. The hedgehog toy is a good size for her. She is barely large enough to squeak it, but manages, so I was hopeful for a toy she can grow with. The Shake and kill maneuver dislodges the hedgehog cover pretty quickly, and once it comes off it is easier for it to come off again. :( On the plus side, the fabric of the hedgehog cover is holding up to her light chewing and she hasn't swallowed it. Like many other reviewers, though, the squeaker broke during her first play session with the hedgehog. :( Sad owner. Kira is still playing with the parts.
