Freshly fermented 5, Recipe nul points
I bought the rye sourdough starter as all of my previous attempts at sourdough had ended in failure due to failed homemade starters. The Freshly fermented packet worked a treat - the instructions are good and easy to follow. Unfortunately, the recipe I used called for rye flour and cracked rye, which was difficult to find. So I bought rye grains and tried to crack them myself. I tried the food processor, the mortar and pestle and then the food processor again. I then soaked it. At any rate, I produced two beautifully risen and coloured loaves that broke your teeth when you bit into them because of the hardness of the rye. So, great job Freshly Fermented; bad job me. I haven't given up yet but will probably try a more basic recipe ! Theodora

Some grains in a tiny envelope
I've successfully made my own sourdough starter but ordered this as I wanted to experience something older and more robust. You basically get some grains in a tiny envelope - not even any instructions! In fact, the package frustratingly includes a flyer big enough to print the instructions but which sends you to the makers' website... You're then told to feed the starter with the same flour the starter is made from (mine was rye).To be honest, if you have some rye flour, just put a couple tablespoons in a jar with 3 tablespoons water and then add one tablespoon flour and 1.5 of water twice a day and in a week you'll have something better than this. I did this (but with spelt) and my homemade starter is thriving and this one looks dead. It's not like I don't know what I'm doing! A total scam.

Ok...but..
All ok but Amazon price is more than double of the producer catalog on their own website. This is extremely disappointing.

Not bad
The product definitely looks bigger in the image, it comes with a link instructions online. The instructions MAY be a little bit inaccurate as it says it will activate a lot faster than it did, however this could possibly be due to conditions and yeast is not always going to work exactly how you want.

2 years, still going strong
An excellent starter, very robust and easy to use. Have been baking with it for 2 years now and it’s still working great. Highly recommend.

Not Freshly Fermented
Came in freeze-dried form. Tried following instructions but think I messed up. Not particularly lively after 3 days and had distinct 'cheesy' smell to it. I was using a Lakeland fermentation jat that I'd used for a previous culture that I killed some time ago. Maybe I didn't clean the jar thoroughly enough?

Didn’t work despite following the instructions
Despite following the instructions included on this page to activate the starter it completely failed. I tried several further feeds over the course of a week but it remained almost wholly inert.I am an experienced bread maker & my previous sourdough purchased from Amazon lasted for several years. Worst of all, I was left without bread over the entire Xmas period. When I tried to get a refund I was told thus item was not eligible (despite bring clearly defective). It was only after persistence with Amazon customer services that a refund was finally issued.I cannot recommend this product at all.

Did not work.
I ordered the SF Sourdough starter. I do know how to cultivate a starter, I have done so several times before. However, this particular freeze dried stuff did not work at all. I tried unbleached white flour from an organic mill first. Nothing. After 24h I added some wholewheat. Nothing after 12 hours. Still waiting. No bubbles, no tangy smell, nothing. Just flour and water. So far, this has been a mistake.

Caro y no funciona

Werde meinen Sauerteig jetzt ohne Hilfe ansetzen.
