Great tool does just what it promises & at a great price
This gadget is a fraction of the cost of even hiring a professional cable finder but for most of us will do all we need. The instructions could be better but just as some of the reviews say - After playing with it for a short while u learn how to use it. - Great tool

Didn't work for me
I got this to find a break in a buried automower wire.My unit did come with instructions and 2 9 volt batteries.I followed the instructions and I can find the wire easily enough but when I got to what I thought was a break in the wire I found that the wire was intact! It seems to me that the receiver is susceptible to interference and changes in depth of the wire. Also the distance from the transmitter seems to effect the signal strength. So I am going to try and use this some more to see if I can improve my technique but for now I am disappointed.

Excellent product
Previously I was using an AM radio to detect breaks in the perimeter wire which worked a few times but it was hard to locate other times. I used this product instead and I found 2 breaks in the perimeter wire and guide wire instantly. Highly recommended!

Just didn't work for me
I tried for several hours. Sometimes I got a "null" signal when I was above the wire, sometimes I didn't. It was far, far from clear. There was sufficient variation in tone even in places without a wire at all that I could have dug up half the garden with false positives. Useless for me.

Ideal For Robot Mowers
Easy to trace buried perimeter wires and to pinpoint underground breaks. Looks fairly cheaply made but does the job for a fraction of the cost of professional tools.

Simply Didn't Work
Had a break in my robotic mower cable. This gave a signal the whole way round my large garden (despite no continuity when tested). Tried reducing sensitivity but it simply gave whole series of false readings.

Underground cable detector
Detected broken underground cable on my robotic mower in minutes. Easy to operate. This a really useful addition to my tool box

Perfect for finding robot mower boundary line breaks
Signal generator - one lead on the boundary line, one in earth, then simple walk around with the receiver to find the break.I went from both ends and found the break within about 30cm so minimal wire to lift and repair.Good machine.

Helped me out a lot!
I was a little skeptical when I bought this product; I didn't know if this was any good for finding underground cables, but it turned out it was! I did my tracing by connecting the live wire of the cable (power is turned off) to the red alligator clip and putting the black alligator clip on a thin wire that was long enough for me to reach the ground. This way, I could connect the wire to a screwdriver and poke it in the ground. I first tried just connecting the black alligator clip to the neutral conductor, but those results were worse than with the screwdriver in the ground. The signal didn't diminish that much after ±20 meter of wire, even though the soil was pretty solid and the cable was buried ±30 cm underground. I needed to get used to the system at first; don't just swish the antenna back and forth because this may give false results. Instead, gently sweep the ground and hear for a strong signal going into a weak signal (= a sign that you're right on top of the cable) going back into a strong signal on the other side of the cable.Eventually, I found out that I had a break underground. I first thought that the tester was faulty because I didn't get good readings, but after some digging, it was clear that the tester was working like a charm. You do sometimes get some hiccups (weird horror-like sounds when you crank up the volume of the receiver too much) and you have to take your time to get good measurements, but this is definitely useful for outdoor cable tracing!
