There are reasons that everyone gives this book 5 Stars
You can scroll down to other reviews of this book, I would simply be repeating the praises that others have for this golf/travel guide.I devoured this book in almost one sittting. The advice is sincere, genuine and as helpful as travel advice gets. There is no mystery why everyone has rated this book five stars: it IS that good.I am planning a trip to Scotland in 2009 for our regular foursome. With this book I have a good idea what our group needs to decide on before we go.(E.g., Is playing at St. Andrews the major reason for our trip? Do we want to stay in a hotel/a B&B/a self-catering location? Do we want to stay in St. Andrews town itself or are we willing to pack up and re-locate to other locations? Do we want to spend $350 to play one fantastic course or 4 lesser-known links?)This book is practical and I recommend it WITHOUT any reservation!

Perfect tool
I am writing this to express my extreme satisfaction with "Golf in Scotland" by Allan Ferguson. I purchased the first edition before I went on a trip to Scotland in May of 2008 and I found out that I overpaid severly for many of the costs of my trip. Allan provides all of the tools in great detail that anyone will need to plan their own golf trip to Scotland for much less than any tour operator would charge. I am currently planning another trip to Scotland in 2010 and am using the book as my guide. I have recently ordered the new version of "Gold in Scotland" as well. The book gives detailed reviews of Courses, Lodging, Rental car information, and the best ways to get to Scotland via air. Some information in here is truely priceless. Highly recommended for anyone planning to make this trip.Dennis M. RealeDrexel Hill, Pa

The Only Book you need to plan your trip to Scotland!
I used this book to plan my golf trip to Scotland for my brother and I, along with help directly from Mr. Ferguson himself. You really need to read this book over and over again to reap the full benfit of all the info in here. He covers so much important information. I planned my own unique trip, choosing golf courses and places to stay, plus rental car and when to go and what to bring. Our trip came off with no problems, all tee times, rooms, travel, directions, etc were all right on target. We even met other golfers who were using the book as well. I know we saved money using this book as apposed to going through a agancy. I will be using his service again on my next trip as well.

No better way to start your Scotland golf trip
My only reget about this book is that I didn't find it sooner. Those who call Allan ``the Rick Steves of Scottish golf'' are right on the money. Speaking of which, merely by booking our car through Allan, we saved hundreds (thousands if you include the two other cars our friends booked) and we got great vehicles. The reviews nail the golf courses. They give an idea of what to expect, and help you choose. ``Golf in Scotland'' is loaded with information about where to stay and play, and how to get the most out of your trip. His discussion of how to play the Old Course, and how to book other courses, with prices etc., is invaluable. Can't wait to start planning our next Scottish excursion, with Allan's book as our guide.

Great book for Golf in Scotland
For anyone who wants to play golf in Scotland, this is the book for you. Everything you wanted to know about golf in Scotland - and more. It has about a page or two of information about each of 74 great courses in Scotland. There is a special chapter about golf at St. Andrews. Also includes info on golf club rental which is very useful for folks who don't want to lug their clubs from the US and pay the extra baggage fees. Also tips about when to go and where to stay. If you want to golf in Scotland, this book is invaluable.

Great trip addition for Scotland
Planning a golf trip to Scotland, this is a great book to assist with that. The book is a bit dated and some of the lesser known hotels may not still be in business, however this will give you an idea about the areas, courses and what to expect. A perfect addition to a trip to Scotland. He also details many suggested trips and courses to play, going through each and offering helpful tips for everything, what town to stay in, and even discusses course history. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to aid in the planning of your "Golf" trip to Scotland.

Good resource with some limitations
Before things become critical let me state one thing. This is the best single resource for planning your own golf trip from the USA to Scotland, though there are a few limitations.1) Scotland has over 500 golf courses. The 68 selected in the book include all of the most expensive courses in Scotland. The book advises to think of this trip as " your first golf trip to Scotland" rather than the "golf trip of a lifetime." But subsequently orients the reader to the most expensive courses available. Notable areas that are barely covered in the book are the Northeast Coast with excellent courses such as Reay, Wick, Buckpool, Hopeman, Cullen, Arbroath and Inverllochy, though the author does mention Fraserburgh and Duff House Royal. Also the municipal courses of Aberdeen are not mentioned at all, but include a course designed by Alister Mackenzie and the original links of the Royal Aberdeen Club. Also there are 2 Fore 1 , Green Fee and Green Free vouchers where you can play many courses at 50% discount that are excellent courses. This is mentioned by the author but not noted in the course descriptions in the book.2) The lodging selections by the author also include the most expensive lodging in each town. Get on Google map or trip advisor and you can find excellent lodging in most towns for less than 50 pounds per person per night, some for less than 30 pounds. If you have the funds and want royal treatment then by all means enjoy. However if you wish to explore Scotland, rub elbows with the locals and get more bang for the buck, start with this book and get on the web and start looking around. You can have a great trip for less!
