Curtis Creek Manifesto: A Fully Illustrated Guide to the Stategy, Finesse, Tactics, and Paraphernalia of Fly Fishing

Start here!
Over the past several years, I must have given close to a dozen copies of this book away. It's essential equipment for anyone who's picked up his or her first fly rod and is taking those first steps into the world of fly fishing -- clear, entertaining, and funny. The late Sheridan Anderson -- self-described "eternal foe of the work ethic" -- has ingeniously made fly fishing approachable for decades of prospective anglers. Simply a classic. As the title suggests, the book concentrates on the skills most useful on small streams and creeks, where one is often very close to the trout . . . and where finesse in presenting the fly always trumps distance and power. It's also where one learns to be sneaky, and eventually master the "Curtis Creek crawl." It's hard to say it any better than Anderson: "A frightened fish cannot be caught."The book is full of similar nuggets of wisdom and wonderfully wacky illustrations, penned the author himself. If fly fishing can change your life, you won't find a better place to start.

The finest primer
I had this book many years ago and it got me started on fly fishing.Life happened; I lost my book and I lost many years to being too busy to fish, pathetic.I have time now and I still have my equipment so I went looking for my great textbook to no avail. I was thrilled to find this here. You need this book if you are new to fly fishing and have no mentor that you can go with. You also probably need this book to help you refine your techniques if you already know what you're doing (sort of, like me).I can't recommend it highly enough, light hearted and yet full of wonderful content.

Might be the only guide you need to get started and maybe for longer than that!!
Clear concise guide to all aspects of learning to fly fish. A handy reference for the veteran. Print and drawings are bold enough to be read by the light of a campfire. Goes with me in my fishing bag everywhere I fish. Have had mine since the 1980s. A friend recently got interested in fly fishing so I sent him one. He liked it so much, he bought 2 for friends.Pros:-Bold print and drawings great for aging eyes by the campfire-great for the novice for gear selection, rigging, stalking (yes stalking) and cleaning fish)-durable magazine sized pages take lots of finger-lickin' going through them over 30 years.Cons:Doesn't rig your gear or catch your fish for you

Knowledgeable, fun, worth every penny.
Love the cute cartoons and the extensive amount of knowledge in such a small book. It really gets right to the point and explains things so clearly that it’s improved my fly fishing! I’m no longer the catcher of trees, but the catcher of fish. Highly recommend if you’re just starting out and want to learn everything you need to know, without going to a class.

Humorous, Informative Introduction to Fly Fishing
The Curtis Creek Manifesto is book about the basics of fly fishing written in a humorous, cartoon-like style that probably will appeal to younger (read teens and pre-teens) than adults. However, adults don't let that fool you; if you interested in learning to fly fish this is a pretty good primer for a reasonable price. I think the only one better that is written in a similar style is 'Everyone's Illustrated Guide to Trout on a Fly'; unfortunately the latter is out of print best I can tell. Most topics are handled in a single page or at most 2 (Fly tying does rate 4 pages; by far the most to any topic); again this is an introduction, not a thorough instruction. Topics include among others, casting, flies, trout food, hooking and landing, equipment, basic fishing styles, reading a stream; even esoteric things like cleaning and cooking, the priorities of fishing for trout with a fly rod, the 'eleven commandments', and 'tickling' for trout ('fishing' with bare hands). The 4-star rating comes from the fact that the book was published in 1978; while some parts of the sport have changed little in several hundred years, other have, including newer equipment and materials. I recommend this book to those who are looking for a gift for a younger child/friend/sibling (or an adult that still reads Batman comic books) who are newly interested in fly fishing.

Whimsical with fun illustrations
I found this in the reading material at a Georgia vacation cabin This is a true fly fisherman’s guide to the craft. It’s an entertaining grand overview of the craft written for all because of its style. My son- in-law is a diehard coastal creek fisherman in Florida that has recently become interested in fly fishing. He enjoyed this gift.

The essence of fly fishing for trout boiled down to 50 pages.
Don't listen to the (very) few detractors of this book. While some mentions of tackle and tippet strength in this book are dated (it was written in the 70's), everything else is dead on for what you need to catch wild trout in the mountains, East or West (or upper Mid-West for that matter). This book succinctly covers the fundamentals of trout fishing such as stealth, locating prime fish lies, casting, knots, and gear basics. This book should be required reading for any beginner, and even experienced anglers should own it because it contains fundamentals we fishermen always seem to forget. True, this book won't tell you how to catch fish on the Dream Stream, or how to rig that hot 10-fly french nymphing rig for your 11 foot 2 weight rod everyone is talking about these days, but those skills are outliers in the grand scheme of things. This book gives you the basic skills to catch trout in moving water almost anywhere. Read it, and give it to someone else who is getting started.
