Great illustrations, good timeline guide to button history
Great illustrations, good timeline guide to button history. It does summarize and is a bit general but a great book to start with for a novice like me.

Colorful and Comprehensive
What a wonderful book! Overflowing with information about old and collectible buttons. Beautifully illustrated to help with learning and just plain enjoyment. Bits of humor as well, which is fun when reading or looking up new button finds.

Informative but no real price guide
This book is smaller than I would have expected, though it has a fair amount of information about kinds of buttons, how they are made, etc. It doesn't have much information about what makes a button more valuable, or how to value buttons, which is something I would have liked. The photos are mediocre, and the "Price Guide" is difficult to use, and is not very complete. For example, it will give you a page number and then say the buttons on the top section of the page (and they could be referring to more than half a dozen buttons) range from $X amount to $X amount. It's really quite vague. The information is good for someone who doesn't know anything about buttons, but it doesn't help a collector figure out what their buttons are worth.

Incredible info on buttons and materials!
This is the best book on buttons, by far. Osborne covers their uses, the materials they're made of, and what to look for when collecting them. She also covers other sewing collectibles. For me, the info on materials is the most useful: why people used bone, how they shaped nuts, how to identify real ivory, how to see the differences between early plastics and today's plastics.

Very good iformation and overview, but won't help you evaluate any particular button
I was hoping this book would help me begine the process of categorizing and getting at least a general idea of which buttons in my collection (which is large) may have value. It did not really give me that, but did give me an overall idea of the elements that are important when collecting buttons, e.g. the back.

Buttons,buttons,buttons
I was so excited to receive my book about buttons! It has a great deal of information on where the buttons came fromhow they were made and when they were made. The book also has a pricing chart at the back of the book for nearly all the types of buttons. Overall I would recommend this book to people who arebeginners in collecting buttons just like me. I collect only glass buttons and there is alot of information on this type.Have fun with collecting and make sure to read this book!

I have one, and I'm giving one for Christmas. You need this book too!!!
If you could afford only one button book then this is the one you should buy. Start with this book, if you want to know more about the buttons that someone gave you, or some you bought or found somewhere. This gives the basic details about backs and their facts, dating buttons by the shanks, and what that material is on the front of the button.

A must have!
This is a must have for any button collector and perfect for the beginner. . Although the values are not current it's one of the best to use for identification and background. Not over-sized - easy to take along. You will refer to it over and over again.
