KunzSmall Block Plane

This is a nice little plane for the money. I don't care how much you spend on a plane, all of them need to have be inspected, trued and have the blades sharpened. With that said the high dollar planes are a close to being perfect as money can buy..... but still not perfect. These Kunz planes are a great starting platform for an awesome everyday planes because the materials are top notch, they are made in Germany (not China), the designs are all copies of the tried and true Stanley models, and really the amount of work you put into it to get a high end outcome is minimal. So that is my reason for giving it a five. I feel overall that the Kunz planes are all a five when the dust settles and the work is done. It is like money in the bank.Yes my hand planes are the most used tools in the shop and yes I do own some of the high dollar planes as well. The high dollar planes are nice, work great, less work overall, but at the same time I work really hard for my money and that is why I think a little work on my plane to bring up to my expectations is expected. I take my expensive planes apart and have to work on those too. These are suppose to be tools after all not a work of art that you are scared to use because you had to take out a second mortgage on the family farm to afford the tools (exaggeration but you get my point).

Very poor grind and casting on the cap Iron.Blade steel is very sharp. Base is flat. But the cap Iron holds it down at an angle “3/32-0” and because there’s no room to grind it straight I had to return it. very disappointed

I torture tools. This thing is great, sharp. And easy to adjust. Oh. And cheap

I do not like that my plane does not have KUNZ written anywhere on it (like the picture shows). For all I know I received a Chinese knock off. Quality is OK, but it works perfect. Its a plane for a person that doesn't need the overpriced brass/ gold plated novelty "boutique" planes.

I wound up using this one-handed plane a lot. After I got the back flattened and sharpened the bevel, it would really slice. The iron is held in place by spinning the wheel screw to secure it. Once you get the iron square and close to where it needs to be, tighten it. Final adjusting of the iron is done by tapping either the rear of the iron or the green frame. I found one can actually make quite exact cutting adjustments this way. If you need a one hand smoothing plane this one is quite good for the money.

Would be nice if all the machine marks were grounded flat. I spent a few hours sanding the sole flat to great all the machine mill marks out blade too same thing almost not worth it. I will probably buy a better blade for it as well so a 75 dollar investment 35 for plane and 40 for blade and half a day of sanding and honing think better buy a really good one for 100. I really wants to tru these Kunz products so now I know again you get what you pay for. I bought a flat sole spokeshave and same dam thing I had even more time in that because I had to scrap the pant and sand were the blade sits because wasn’t flat so much catching it crazy and round bottom one a whole bunch of problems. So people saying these tools are good for the value probably have no clue there definitely not for fine furniture or wood working maybe good for 2 x 4’s (pine) or soft wood not figured crotch walnut!

This is a great little block plane. The blade that came with it required some much needed sharpening before I attempted using it. I have already used it several times with the remodeling project I am involved in.
