Above all, USEFUL
I have been using the first edition of this book and was glad to see an update., though in some ways I find the earlier edition better. For instance, the earlier edition gives sections for Zinfandels and Syrah/Shiraz, as well as Rieslings; here those varieties are subsumed into "Other" categories. I do not invariably agree with the author's opinions I and avoid one label she recommends, for instance. You need to trust your own taste, of course. Assuming you know what general kinds of wine you like, this pocket-sized guide is wonderfully helpful. It presents wines first by type--red or white say-- then within those kinds the particular grape, e.g Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinor Noir, Merlot; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio. The arrangement is then by ascending price, and within the price range comes the recommendations of good, better, and best selections--three wines on each double page, with illustration of the bottle and fifty words or so describing each wine. The featured wines are those most likely to be found in local wine and liquor shops. The author has found that there is uniformity of a vintage from year to year, so does not mention years; she does say that the wines she includes are meant to be enjoyed when released. I found a few surprises among brands I have seen but ignored. Who would have thought that Barefoot would be both very high quality and very low priced!? I recommend taking the book right into he shop so you can check out each available wine.

ONES PALATE SHOULD DICTATE WHAT’S GOOD; NOT ONE’S WALLET!
The perfect follow-up to her best selling first edition of Good, Better and Best wines. In the “must read” Introduction, Ms. Hammond stated her objectives clearly, and her caveat to let her sample, and you sip, makes sense. One should not fail to read the Introduction and the Trade Secrets, as it is easy to overlook these essential informationals that are right on. The upgrade to four-color graphics is a plus. The clever sidebars are informative and add to the educational aspect of the book. This is the perfect gift for new and experienced wine lovers as it will prove the fact that there are many darned good wines under $15.00. I use this publication regularly when teaching the wine making process and for evaluating what is right for the palate and not the pocketbook.

Filled with fun facts and spoiler alert.... a Hidden Gems Section of bottles to search out. Well Done...Again! Cheers!

Lots of good suggestions for affordable wine
I loved the reviews of the various wines. It also reminded me of some of my favorites of days of yore. I will use it to try these wines and taste for myself to compare my opinion. Lots of fun.

Can I find that around here? Yes.
So often wine advice lands in two regions, too expensive or too limited availability. Good, Better, Best is the guide you need when you are out of town and away from your fine wine shop. Or maybe you don't have a fine wine shop in your area. Never fear, this guide is here.I am excited that Christmas shopping just got easier this year. I must have given away about ten copies of the first edition. A collectors item now to be sure. I have had a chance to peruse through the Kindle edition just now and I know it's going to be available on my phone every time I need it, especially when I didn't think I would need it. And isn't that the best reason for doing something again? The second edition on my phone when I am stuck on which woody Chardonnay with butter notes I should grab from the bin in front of me. Awesome. If nothing else, often the reviews confirm what I knew about certain varieties, like it's Thanksgiving this week and I love Gewürztraminer, I know which one I love, it's grand to see that Carolyn agrees with me. The author has a no nonsense manner which brings the sometimes lofty language of wine into a comfortable relaxed conversation. My previous review in 2011 still holds true. "Perfect for those that need to know what to buy at that wine shop that is really a beer or liquor store. These owner's can not help only have the mass produced bottles, but sometimes, that's all you can find. "Pro hospitality tip, pick up an extra copy and give it to your local wine source, mark it store copy, that way you would have a go to if you need it, but your local will appreciate the increased sales.Great addition to those wine baskets people put together as gifts or silent auction items.

Excellent guide for anyone who enjoys an affordable, good tasting wine!
After reading and greatly appreciating the first edition, I bought and shared several copies. I was glad to find out a second edition was now available. It is a perfect guide for family, friends and myself who enjoy affordable, but good wines. The introduction itself is illuminating! Make sure you read every word. It is so helpful having Carolyn explain (in words I can understand) what the types of wines are, what is good about them and excellent pairing tips. I enjoy the informational tidbits about wines, "A bit of history", "Hey, it's organic", "Did you know", etc. Facts and myths - all easy to read, down to earth.I can go to the local liquor store and find these wines on the shelf - they are not obscure, unknown and too expensive for the general wine lover. I can plan events knowing what wines will be my best choices. Thanks for this quality "no nonsense guide to popular wines!" We are already using several recommendations for our holiday events. As an aside, I also love the color pictures in this edition.
