Review of The Lattimore/Grene 'Euripides V'
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this volume. It's the last of Euripides', perhaps, I thought, the place to stick all the plays that no one will ever get to. However, the 'Bacchae' was an especially enjoyable read, a great way to end my reading of Greek tragedy. As usual, this volume presents excellent translations, but lacks proper footnotes to explain passing mythological references to the reader.

The Sunset of Athenian Civilization
This volume of Euripides’s last plays provides an accessible translation with minimal editorial direction. The plays themselves provide an interesting reflection by Euripides on the role of the divine as Athenian civilization falls to Sparta at the end of the Peloponnesian War.Increasingly, Euripides questions his earlier belief of a natural law upheld by the gods. In the Electra, unlike Sophocles’s account, it is unclear whether the vengeance sought by the children of Agamemnon is righteous or an example of status seeking. In the Bacchae, the gods—long removed from direct action in Euripidean drama—return in the form of Dionysius placed centerstage bringing chaos instead of harmony among men.If one is a bit of a romantic, looking back with affection at the acme of Athenian civilization before the democracy was overthrown, Socrates executed and the great tragedians passed from the scene, these last works of Euripides will be treasured. If, in addition, one likes ancient texts in easily read language with minimal editorial comment then one should choose this edition of Euripides’s tragedies.
