Kinky Curly Curl Custard Gel, 8 oz

This is my always go to for a moderate holding gel. The cast it sets when dry is just enough and it scrunches out nice and soft. There is no strong smell and it never feels drying on my 3b curly hair. There is good reason for the fact that this gel has been around and been popular for so many years. Yes, it feels a bit expensive but you really don't have to use much. Plus, sometimes it's just worth it to get the thing that works the best...every time.

Edit: Figured out my day 2 and 3 curls. I wet my hair with a spray bottle. Apply Curls Blueberry Bliss and scrunch, then apply a thin amount of gel with prayer hands and scrunch again. Love this gel.For reference I have low density, fine, wavy-curly hair. I am mixed with Italian and black and my hair frizz is extremely hard to tame. I live in Georgia with humidity and semi hard water. Now on to the review.I had been using the Kinky Curly shampoo and Knot Today leave-in for a couple of months and really liked the products, so decided to try out the gel. Turns out these are some of the best curls I have ever gotten. I washed with Come Clean, deep conditioned with Deva Curl Heaven in Hair, added Knot Today leave in and then applied the curling custard. The gel goes on smooth and left me with no wet frizz. It dried into a cast that was easy to break and left my hair soft and moisturized. The gel texture resembles flaxseed gel so it is somewhat wet and slippery which I think helps it blend into my hair better than any other gel I've used before (which includes Shea, Mixed Chicks, Curls Blueberry Bliss, Aussie, Garnier, Eco Styler). It just glided on. For this specific photo I actually washed my hair in the night, and wrapped it with a silk scarf while it was still half wet and could already feel the cast. In the morning I undid my wrap and shook the hair out to break the cast and voila! Big spiral curls. They we're so beautiful. I honestly wasn't expecting these results. In this pic I didn't style upside down (I did side ways) which is why my roots are not springy, but that was on purpose as I wanted to wear my hair half up half down with a relatively smooth top. In the end the curls lasted about 75% of the day, which is great. I was out and about at the park and my son tussles my hair a lot. Very satisfied. I haven't been able to figure out the next day curls yet, but I am super happy with the wash day results and am pretty sure I can figure out how to work this into 3 days without washing. This gel doesn't dry my curls.

I love the diversity that comprises so-called "African-American" hair (whatever that is). Being a mixed-race people, we know that our hair covers the gamut of texture and appearance. I have type 4 coarse hair (I think that is how it is categorized these days). I was teased for years about my hair being "nappy."Kinky-Curly works marvelously on my hair, interestingly enough. I heard from others that it did not. It softens my hair beautifully. However, I think it depends on the hairstyle that one is rocking. My hair is natural, brushed upward into a bush ball, or what some call an afro-puff. I then put a plastic stretchy band on it to hold it together in the ball. Okay, so I use two products to make this work. I have to use a "stiff" product (Murray's Black Australian beeswax, or Jamaican Mango and Lime Blax Black Wax) to keep the shorter parts of my hair from sticking out. I then apply the Kinky-Curly. It gives an unbelievable crimply and curly appearance to my hair, and along with the other products, so there is just enough stiffness to keep the crimps and style in place. I am sorry not to be able to describe my process better, but this is what works very well for me after years and years of trying to figure. Sadly, I did not even know my hair could actually crimp until Kinky-Curly. There may be other products that would have worked. It is the only one I have found, so far.

FINALLY! LOVE this product. I have wavy/curly hair and this changed the game. I used it sparingly on wet hair not damp, and after the cast, I head a head of curls. The cast is not firm, and after you break the cast, the curls have spring back, shine and lasted all day. I waited to get this and after spending $$$$$$ - Iam done. This is the styling product for me.

I read about this product in a review on Facebook that ranked it number 1 for curly hair. I have lots of hair which tends to frizz. This product is amazing! I put it on when my hair is very wet. It applies really well and that’s it. I let it dry naturally and my curls are great with no frizz! I’ve been getting compliments on my hair all week. I thought I would share my feedback with the rest of you. You should definitely try it. You won’t be disappointed!

Oh my goodness where do I begin?! My hair is basically frizzy, use to be thick but I lost a lot of it after I had COVID last year. I have tried numerous product to give me more of a defined curl but I would only end up with what looked like cotton on top of my head. From the moment I applied this product I knew it was going to be different. I love the smell, I love how easy it is to apply. I love how my curls will last a good 4-5 days and still look fabulous without any touch ups. You only need a tiny bit of it, basically dip your fingers and apply throughout your hair. I love how soft it becomes after you break up the “crunchiness” out of it. I will never be without this product. It truly is a wonderful product! Thank you!
