Not perfect, but gorgeous enough to overlook any flaws
Not perfect. But gorgeous enough to make you overlook it's minor flaws. This is my first fore into the Bandai Soul Spec line of more modern "Real Robots". I'm fairly impressed. The Opening Sillouette Dragonar 1 seems to be a great place to start. I come to this line mainly more familiar with Bandai's Super detailed Soul of Chogokin line and their wonderfully articulated Super Robot Chogokin offerings. It's my understanding that the Soul Spec line was more of an offshoot of the SOC line, to specialize in some more modern types of anime bots (that weren't Gundam or Macross). By and large it's an interesting change from the crazy engineering of the SOC's. This set reminds me almost of a blending of Bandai's SOC line and their Master Grade model kits. While yes it is a Gokin, with a healthy amount of metal. All of it is on the inside. The core figure is the metal skeleton or armature. Out of the box it is bare, with no armor attached. You get to add all of the armore pieces. This is both a high point and a low point of the figure. High because it is a cool mechanic that allows for some neat features. Flawed because it's easy to knock some panels off.Articulation of the figure is sadly a little meh. It's good. It's serviceable. The skeleton moves in almost any way you would want. But it's a basic skeleton and the engineering feels a little dated. Everything you need is there. But it lacks some modern "nice to haves". Elbows and knees are both single jointed. Hips and feet don't pull down. Shoulders don't have the modern pivot or crossover joints etc. it's a serviceable figure that has about the same articulation as a good plastic Gundam model kit.Paint is gorgeous. The paint scheme just pops. It draws the eye like few other things on your shelf, with astonishing presense. Accessories are good. Just what they need to be. Rifle, beam sabers, sheath able knives, throwing bombs, that wonderful shield, and the high point of the figure, the lifter unit flight pack. Yeah make room on your shelf. There is no way you will be displaying this fig without that. The only complaint on the overall finish is with all the metal on the Shelton, it leaves the outside feeling plasticy. It's a really minor nitpick as it still has good weight in the hand and paint apps are perfect.Getting some of the detail parts in place can be finicky, with a lot of teeny tiny plastic bits that are easily lost (the ammo magazines stand out). Wrestling the flight rig onto the figure is a challenge that requires three hands. But once on it is rock stable.Size wise it is about the same size as the larger SRC bots such as Mazinkaiser, or the smaller SOC's such as Leoparden, Danguard A and similar. He shelves extremely well on display alongside some of the Super Robot Wars SRC's such as Wessreiter and Alteisan. And would look well in company with any die cast series Gundams or Valkyrie. It's lineage looks more Gundam than Macross though. The stand is a nice flight display base that supports the robot in flight mode well, and is sculpted to resemble a launch catapult. It's only flaw is a lack of a sign plate. One word of caution, when assembling it and putting on the armor, read or rather study the directions carefully. The armor panels most go on in a certain order or you will have problems. Also note there are two white hip pieces on the skeleton when it comes out of the box. Those get taken off as the first step. They do not go back on. The non English instructions can be confusing on that point. (I assume they are for a different Dragonar version that shares a common frame.)Overall a really nice piece. I'll be picking up a few more Specs.
