Epic Zero: Tales of a Not-So-Super 6th Grader (Tales of a 6th Grade Superhero)

All Elliot wants for his twelfth birthday is to be a superhero like everyone else in his family (even the dog has super powers). But no such luck. Looks like he’s stuck being an ordinary kid struggling through middle school. Everything changes when he meets a girl who believes he is the key to finding a mysterious, powerful orb. Now the fate of the world is in his hands, and he has the chance to prove he is more than just a zero.What I liked: fun characters! Elliot is a relatable kid, flaws and all, who really just wants to fit in. The plot is fun and there is lots of action to keep readers turning the pages.What I didn’t like: not much. It was a tad slow at the beginning, but the action picked up very quickly.Super fun read!5 out of 5 stars

I used this book to get my 5th graders interested in reading. At the beginning of the year my 5th graders hated even having to touch a book. I did research online (for many hours) trying to find a book I thought I could hook them on... and luckily, I stumbled across this book series. I wanted a book that had a series (so if they liked it, they had something to continue with), and something that matched our classroom. Our classroom was superhero themed and obviously this book blended into the theme beautifully! Not only were my kids looking forward to reading every week but they COULD NOT put the book down. I even had issues with some of my faster readers spoiling chapters ahead. It was a wonderful problem to have. We had engaging classroom discussions, excellent foreshadowing, and even greater talks about past chapter connections. Also, I really appreciate that when a character died they were actually left dead. So many of my kids swore that a character would come back because all their favorite TV shows and movies bring these kinds of characters back... but this book did not! It was refreshing and I think it kept the kids hooked even more. This book also has excellent resources for Teachers! My kids are making their meta profiles after thanksgiving and then they are making a diorama of their favorite chapter from the book! My only comments of (WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR) is the book can go over some heavy topics such as a parental figure death, loss of a friend, and some fight scenes are pretty visual (like a bar fight). The book also uses some words like "moron" that you may not want your kids to say. But, I talked with my 5th graders before reading and explained issues like this BEFORE we read. I think if a parent or teacher does this, you are good to go.

With all the self-hyping that goes on in this world, Elliot Harkness is a refreshing hero for the rest of us.He's also a great role model for kids growing up today. Even though he doesn't seem to possessthe qualities of greatness, he stays positive and keeps trying until he finally understands he has had something special in himall along.To say Epic Zero is filled with interesting characters is an epic understatement. It's like a Star Wars bar scene in every chapter.It's also filled with great action and lots of humor.The opening chapter is truly laugh out loud funny. Elliott wakes up on hisbirthday hoping to find he has developed some unique power like everyone else in his super hero family. No such luck. But because ofit, you're in his corner right from the start.

This is what they term a "Zero", while someone with powers is known as a "Meta". The "Metas" are split into eight categories based on what type of power they have, such as super strength or flight. Elliott does what he can to contribute to his family's fight against crime, but is left behind when a crime occurs.I liked the voice the author uses. Elliott's personality is displayed well, and he is a pretty likeable character. Since he has no powers and feels kind of like an outsider, it is easy for the reader to identify with him. He gains some confidence after making a new friend at school, and this ultimately leads him down a path of self-discovery.Some of the characters here are borrowed from other sources, although given different names and changed slightly. The author actually brings this up at one point in the story, which made it less corny for me. The villains could have been fleshed out better to make them more engaging. The showdown at the end was pretty satisfying given how the story builds to it.The book is definitely intended for younger readers, but the writing is good enough that even adults can enjoy it.

If I had to rate this book then I would give it 2 thumbs up and 10 out of 10 stars. I mainly love this book because it tells you about friendship and loyalty. When I read the back cover of the book, I was really wondering if Elliot was going to be epic or if he was just always going to be a zero. I really liked how the book showed all of the superheros’ and supervillains’ profiles. If I had to pick just one word to describe this book I couldn’t so here’s a few. We got this book as a birthday gift to our 7-years old who loves superheros. It's a bit challenging for him to read on his own as he is a first-grader. To my surprise that he has been reading it on his own and has talked about the main characters several times in his conversation (he is a boy of few words :-)) with me. I read it myself and found it's a very interesting book, it's very fun to read and nice writing as well. I would definitely recommend this book than those comic superheros books that got kids almost lost their ability to read.

It is good.But why kill K'ami.Anyway any good character will met a great end .The story is good , it had a lot of humor , action , shocks , twists , adventure.My favourite part was when Elliot said this to The Orb Of Oblivion. Elliot: Shine as the brightest light in the galaxy.The Orb Of Oblivion: I will.Elliot: Detonate………….So that's whenThe Blood Bringer ship got blasted to smithereens .Find out about Blood Bringers ,Metas , The introduction , The Waystation etc.You will fins it very interesting and the plot is there too.This book is amazing but there are three sad deaths: The Orb Of Oblivion , Meta - Taker and the saddest death = K'ami Sollarr……Rating equal = 5/5 = Awesome , Excellent and Fabulous . 4/5 = Good . 3/5 = Average , Ok. 2/5 = Bad , Boring , Waste. 1/5 = Worst , Super bad .In case of sadness questions , that is how much the sadness affects the story , the highest rating means there isn't sadness , but the lower it is …the more sadness.Here is my rating :The Introduction = 5/5 Excellent , Nicely introduced.The Plot = 4.5/5 Lovely , story well written.The Suprises = 4.8/5 Great , the suprises were awesome.The Twists = 4.3/5 Good , twisted my mind.The Adventures = 4.9/5 Fabulous , quite adventurous.The Action = 5/5 Holy crap ,too much actionThe Happiness in the book = 4.1 / 5 Fine , good amount of happiness .The Humour = 5/5 = Quite filaarious.The Deaths Affection ( Sadness ) = 2.8 / 5 = The deaths were really sad and some of them made me cry a bit.Rating Overall = 4.7 / 5 but I will keep the rating five stars.Looking forward to buy the second book.Long Live ……K'ami Sollarr.Of course be epic , Epic Zero (Elliot Harkness).

Immediately made me think of The Incredibles.I liked the trading card style information about main characters at the end of each chapter.I really enjoyed this! Great characters and Elliott's character was very well developed. I will definitely read the other books in the series.

Both kids (6 and 9) loved this story.
