Inexplicable Holes in the Plot!
The premise of this book was interesting and the first half of the book held my interest. . . THEN, the plot totally fell apart. SPOILER ALERT *** The hero and heroine are running from an English soldier who is the heroine's betrothed. They are safely sheltered in the fortified castle of the hero's laird - Angus. They are awaiting nightfall to travel with Laird Angus's help to another powerful lord who can protect them. Just before they leave the castle, the English soldier and his aide-de-camp arrive IN the castle and attack them. How the heck did the heroine's betrothed get into a fortified castle and begin attacking them? Why didn't anyone hear the fight and come to their aid??? Then, in brief, the couple end up with the powerful lord and, the story abruptly ends with the couple fleeing to France with the lord's help. What?? How will they live? Where did the money come from to get them settled in France? Do they speak French?? It was a very implausible and unsatisfactory ending. It was as if the author ran out of ideas. She desperately needed an editor to find the inconsistencies in the plot and the unrealistic ending. Very disappointed.

I LOVE VISITING SCOTLAND
RETURN OF THE HIGHLANDER is the 4th installment in the Highlander Series. It has all of the elements you are looking for in a novel: passion, action, secrets, trust, betrayal and forgiveness! In the 4th book the author has kept the same theme as in the first 3 books in the series. The story starts in 1730 Scotland. Larena Campbell, a Scottish heiress, is escorted to Leathan castle to save her father, Fitzroy Campbell, from certain death. He was accused of being a Jacobite. While traveling with the English soldiers, she is hurt in an ambush. While scouting for their laird, Angus the Lion of Kinloch Castle, Darach MacDonald and his brother Logan hear the sounds of a battle not far in the distance. Upon reaching the battle site they find much carnage. Darach spots something odd in the foliage and he finds a bold, fierce and beautiful woman, unconscious on their lands. Darach then decides to escort her to the castle where her father is being held prisoner with Logan along as his backup. He knows that she is the daughter of the chief of his enemy clan and betrothed to another man. He will soon become fascinated with this defiant heiress. He is having a hard time controlling his emotions because he is hiding a secret from his past.Along their journey, spending so much time together, Larena and Darach learn to trust each other, share secrets and discover a whole new meaning to friendship and passion. Larena will admit that Darach is truly a brave and honorable highlander and a great protector. She also learns that she wouldn't be able to live without him.Larena and Darach's adventures are filled with passion, danger, action and lots of twists and turns! This 4th novel in the Highlander Series will be everything you have been expecting and more!!!

I did like both Darach and Larena from the beginning
This book had it's ups and downs for me, but thankfully the "downs" were short lived.I did like both Darach and Larena from the beginning. As is typical in most Highland stories, they both come with a lot of clan baggage and complicated family situations. I found myself hoping that they could work it all out, with a limited amount of violence, and attain their HEA.Larena must deal with her feelings for Darach while trying to do her best to save her father. The two situations do not always work well together. In the course of their adventures, there is the requisite "bad guy", in the form of an English soldier. Larena must decide who is telling the truth and who can really be trusted among Darach, her father and her "betrothed".As I said, there is a "down" for me when Larena seems to be influenced by the wrong individuals and her relationship with Darach suffers. I was worried that their separation would go on too long, but the author skips a head to the resolution without making us read too much about the time the couple is apart. The ending is satisfactory and realistic for a Highland romance set in the complicated time of Jacobites and English occupation.Epilogue Whore Alert: None! There is a next book that deals with Darach's brother.. hoping we get some news on Darach and Larena from that.

Darach and Larena
Darach MacDonald (aka Darach Campbell) is a scout for Angus the Lion. Larena Campbell is the daughter of Fitzroy Campbell, a Jacobite sympathizer. When Fitzroy is placed in prison by Colonel Gregory Chatham and the English garrison, Larena escapes and rides to Lord Rutherford for a pardon for her father. On the way back to Leathon Castle, Larena and the English soldiers are ambushed. Darach and his brother, Logan, come upon the aftermath and find Larena unconscious at the bottom of the ravine. When Larena wakes up, she is at the castle of Angus the Lion. She explains to the Laird what happened and why she has to leave posthaste. Angus releases Larena into the care of Darach and Logan. They will escort her back to Leathon Castle to save her father with the pardon.During the journey, Darach and Larena become close. There is a disagreement between the brothers and Darach escorts Larena the rest of the way to Leathon Castle by himself. Their passions ignite and Darach declares his love for her. Will Larena return his love? What will this mean for her father's pardon? Can she have both her father and Darach?I became tired of the uncertainty and confusion in Lana's mind and emotions. The angst was becoming too much. We know more about the hero than we do the heroine. The plot is well thought out. There is a mild cliffhanger because we don't know Logan's location. He just disappears and is not heard from again. There is a steamy love scene tastefully done.

Disappointing
Not up to the usual standards of this author. Plot was very thin, unappealing hero and heroine so one couldn't care less what happened to them. The historical setting was almost non-existent and certainly only a device, lacking in detail. Scenes of a romantic nature were unbelievable within the plot and historical setting making them simply gratuitous pornography. Give this one miss.

It feels like somebody else has written this book
Oh my word, i cannot wait to finish this story! The heroin is SOOO naive and childish! I want him, I don't want him.. I trust him...oh wait, I don't trust him...I say, the guy has a patience of a saint!Sorry Ms MacLean! This novel is nowhere near to what you can produce. It feels like somebody else has written this book. :(

A Good Tale
Darach and his brother Logan, finds and injured lass and dead men everywhere. They take her to Angus the Lion to recover. Angus then orders the brothers to return her to her betrothed. She also carries a pardon from the King, for her father. Intrigue, hatred and revenge, a good tale and I am looking forward to Logan's story next!

DISAPPOINTING
Not Julianne Maclean's usual high standard of storyline-dull.The characters lacked consistent traits which left me confused.I would not recommend this book as I felt more enjoyment to be had from her others-all of which I've read!

Predictable
The plot was old hat and very predictable to the point where it became boring. One for the bin methinks.
