Reality with a hint of dadaism.
If you haven't read Parasyte yet, you have to read it. It's a fantastic series. The Anime is pretty good, although it missed out quite a few of the concepts the amazingly thought provoking manga explored, which made me question a lot of things about human reality.

Awesome BUT the different editions are confusing
This is a great series and I'm glad to see it back in print. I had the first four volumes of the old Mixx edition (2001, green covers) and I was really interested in the story but then for some reason my comics shop stopped carrying it. I wasn't shopping online at the time; years later I had lost track of the series and couldn't get back issues at a reasonable price (I have the same problem with Tezuka's "Phoenix" which I guess I will never get to finish because the volumes I'm missing are out of print and crazy $$$. I just can't spend hundreds of dollars on a comic book, no matter how good it is.) Anyway, the Mixx edition ran to 10 volumes - and Amazon's listing for this series still says it is 10 volumes - but people should be aware that the "new" Kodansha edition is only 8 volumes. The story breaks are in different places, and I got vols 5-8 thinking that would complete the series .. but I have to buy volume 4 again because there's a chunk missing between the end of my old volume 4 and the new volume 5. I'm afraid to buy it used because Amazon isn't making a clear distinction between editions, and I might wind up getting the old, smaller volume 4 which I already have. WHAT A MESS. Also, the art on the old edition was flipped (the parasyte was called "Lefty") but Kodansha has preserved the original orientation, so I will get to see Shinichi's mutant arm magically switch to the right .. and the English translation is just different enough to be jarring. Moral of story: If you like a series, keep up with it online and buy issues as soon as you can. If you don't you'll regret it later.Anyway, none of that really has anything to do with the content of the manga. It has horror elements which at first I thought would be a huge turn-off for me, but the gore is not too extreme, and takes up only a small minority of panels. It has a compelling story that caught my interest very quickly. The character development as Shinichi grows and becomes something .. other than human(?) due to his symbiosis with the Parasyte .. it's really fascinating and I'm glad to have the chance to finally read the rest of this series.
