Not licorice so much, but it is a strongly scented oil. If you are using ylang-ylang for its properties, you can't really worry about the scent. It works well with pulling debris from the pores. I combine it with clary sage in cold process soap for a good complexion bar. Clary sage helps combat fungus and yeast, which is the cause of a lot of acne.

Hi Ruthie H. It's the oil that is extracted first. It's the most purest/organic/potent so to speak during the extracting process. Ylang-ylang is extracted in 3 phases I believe which consists of Ylang-ylang Extra in phase one. Ylang-ylang ll, then ylang-ylang lll. Think of it in terms of Extra Virgin olive oil. Hope this helps.

Can anyone please give me an idea of what Ylang Ylang smells like? Is it like a white flower, woodsy, citrus, etc,....and is it more of a masculine fragrance or feminine? Any extensive descriptions would be greatly appreciated!~ thanks!

Wow, these answers were very helpful, weren't they? Someone said Ylang Ylang smells like over-ripe bananas. Ridiculous. Someone else said it has a citrus-like smell. Wrong. Another described it as smelling like licorice. Uh, no. Someone else said the smell was sort of like gardenia, which is at least in the ball park. Since this question was posted in 2013, I suppose the person who asked might possibly be dead by now, but hopefully this will be helpful to someone. I find Ylang Ylang to be almost floral neutral, you don't actually think "flower" when you smell it, but its definitely closer to a flower than grass. It's actually somewhat cologne-like, easy to use in formulas designed for men, and is considered gender neutral, unlike Jasmine, which is strongly feminine. No one can really explain a fragrance, you have to experience it for yourself. Ylang Ylang is unique, not unlike Lotus, though quite a bit sweeter.

Hi there. Yes you can. I love the smell. It's a soft light scented oil. If you are looking for a strong scent for your diffuser like eucalyptus...this is not the oil for you.

This lovely scent can carry my spirit away to beautiful places

I'm super delighted that I purchased this wonderful ylang ylang by Now. I've never had ylang ylang extra before and it is very superior to ylang ylang III. Ylang extra is a higher quality and more expensive essential oil due to the distillation process. Having purchased ylang III in the past, as that was what was available in the health food stores, I thought that was what ylang smelled like: wonderfully exotic but kind of a medicinal petrolium unpleasant undertone. This Now ylang extra lacks that medicinal petro undertone and is so lovely it can even be worn as a perfume oil. I like to put a couple drops (it's very strong) on my lava bead bracelet and inhale to feel a dreamy improved mood and reduce inflammation. This lovely scent can carry my spirit away to beautiful places. Benefits of ylang are numerous and I will be using it more now that I have discovered Now ylang. For strong healthy hair and to prevent breakage I mix this ylang along with clary sage into hair products or even rub one or two drops in my hands to smooth onto wet freshly washed hair which smell fabulous. For shine and softness, I add Now 100% chamomile. I had no idea that ylang extra would be so fabulous and superior. Very impressed Now!

Love it.

I used to purchase Plant Therapy, but they are really just too expensive at this point to keep using. I only use these to scent my mop water solution or the pad on my steam mop. It works well for those things and is priced more affordable so I will continue to buy it. I find Now to be a quality product no matter what I have purchased from them and they are usually way more affordable than other brands for the same product.
