A Wonderful Story That is Beautifully Illustrated ...
“We Forgot Brock!” reminds us all that both imaginary friends and real friends are wonderful. Carter Goodrich has written and illustrated a charming story about Phillip, a young boy, and Brock, his imaginary friend.Like all well-meaning parents, Phillip’s parents tolerate Phillip’s relationship with Brock and “pretend” to treat him as “real”. Brock wanders away at the Big Fair and goes home with a little girl Anne and her “friend” Princess Sparkle Dust – who is also imaginary. The next day, a devastated Phillip searches for Brock and is about to give up when he locates Brock who is having fun with Anne and Princess Sparkle Dust. Introduced to each other by Brock, the two children and their “friends” become best friends. The illustrations compliment the text of “We Forgot Brock!” and add significantly to the overall appeal of the book. The real people and the real world are illustrated in color; these pictures have both depth and dimension. Brock and Princess Sparkle Dust appear drawn in crayon and are either black-and-white or purple-and-white. The drawings of these two are childlike and lack both depth and dimension. This contrast helps emphasize the reality of imaginary friends to children, but their unreal nature to adults and the real world.“We Forgot Brock!” is a fun-to-read book. It is humorous. It reminds adults that imaginary friends are real to their child companions. It reminds us that as wonderful as imaginary friends are, real friends are even better.
