Sumi-E Just for You: Traditional One Brush Ink Painting

I got this book as a recommendation from a shodo/sumi-e instructor in my martial arts organization. This book has some beautiful samples that can be used to practice painting and the sections include some instruction for how to “get the details right”. It also has a nice little section that briefly covers how to hold a brush, supplies, etc. I’ll include a photo of the contents page so you can see what this book covers. There are some animal paintings that are cool, but no instruction for those.

This was the best of the five books I ordered; simple, insightful, and helpful. My interest is in using sumi-e techiques in brushing oxides on ceramic pieces. Some modification of techniques is required. I "paint" on curved surfaces rather than paper and , use iron, cobalt, and copper oxides instead of ink. But the simplicity and suggestion of sumi-e assists in transending literal interpretation in desigh. It is this spirit that makes this a superior text for my purposes.

Get this one. I've taken a class in oriental brush painting and also bought the Yolanda Mayhall book (quite good too BTW) and the Lucy Wang book for the supplies included. Of all three, this one has the highest level of detail regarding preparation and use of materials, and step-by-step instructions with precise description of how to perform the various brush strokes throughout the book. It's like having a master teacher at your side.

This book was very disappointing to me. It had very little of what I had expected. I do suggest that students do not buy this book. It is really NOT worth the money

Have had this book for years. Recently reread it one of my better books on this subject really basic good information that works.

I am very pleased with this book. I am a beginner and the illustrations and instruction are very clear. Takes you step by step through the process.

This is a very good book to initiate you in the art of Sumi-E, very detailed, step by step on strokes. Now we have a good thing only for our part is practice, practice and practice the only way to master an art.

Le tecniche basilari del sumi-e sono spiegate in maniera molto chiara e corredate da diverse illustrazioni. È incentrato sulla pittura di piante e paesaggi, ma ci sono diverse immagini da cui prendere spunto per dipingere anche altro.

It's o.k. Would have liked to see how to use colour in it. Simple to follow. It's a good starter book.
