Likka (ليقة) is one of the most undervalued tools in Arabic calligraphy. These raw silk fibers are put inside your inkwell and soaked in ink. It regulates the amount of ink you get on your qalam/pen after you dip it in ink. This means you can get a nice, clear, sharp line immediately, rather than a big ink blob that you would get dipping the pen directly into the ink. It prevents spillage of ink from the inkwell. Because likka sort of holds the ink inside your ink well, even if you knock it over, nothing will be spilled.
