Start at the top. assemble each piece so proper clearance is available to open, leave space under waste container to prevent ground contact. Bury any excess when placing.

Can you use this with an existing sign post or is this permanently affixed to the purple post it comes with?

It’s not attached to the purple post. You can attach them to an existing post. You would have to drill into the post to line up with the bag and trash can holes.
