Slow by design but works
This charger seems well-designed and constructed. As others noted, this is a very slow charger, by design (that's probably why it can recharge "non-rechargable" alkaline). Connected with no batteries in it, it draws 0.19A (based on an el cheapo usb meter). With two batteries in it, it draws a constant 0.21-0.25A, even when the batteries are fully charged. Comparing this to the LingsFire LS-S2 Universal Intelligent Automatic Fast USB Port Dual/Double-Channel Rechargeable Battery Spring Charger for 1.2V and 3.7V Rechargeable Battery, 1.2V/AA AAA 3.7V/18650,18500,17650,16340,14500,10500 Batteries (Charger only) , which draws 1.25A when charging, and charges faster, but cannot recharge "un-rechargable" alkaline batteries. The instruction sheet that comes with this device says, "When inserting a discharged 1.5V battery LEDs turn ON, the LED brightness varies from one battery to another, as charging continues LEDs start to dim out. When batteries are fully charged, LEDs turn OFF or dim out (be sure to roll batteries in place to make sure it contacts). When charging re-chargable 1.2V NiCad/NiMH batteries LEDs will not dim out. Just remove them after 24 hours." Also, "Charging time depends on the battery condition and varies up to 48 hours, most will charge within 24 hours."In my brief tests, fully depleted Eneloop AAs took 15-20 hours (hard to tell when they are full, was probably closer to 15). AAA NiMH batteries that were low but not fully depleted took 5-8 hours. I also recharged some half-empty alkaline AAA batteries successfully in a few hours. As the instructions say, the LED will be bright when you insert a dead battery, and will slowly go dim. They did not completely go out for me, but the brightness did give a useful indication of what was happening. So this device works as advertised thus far. It also worked fine with a Solar Charger, AUKEY 20W Dual USB Port Solar Panel for Apple iPhone 6s 6 Plus, Android, Samsung, HTC, LG, Nexus, and more (Foldable, Portable, Fast Charging Technology) , which easily puts out the required amperage. However, you would need a few days of sunlight to fully charge a device (or charge up a power bank with the solar, then plug this device into that.)The device head gets a bit warm but not hot. Batteries only get slightly warm after many hours.I had a little trouble removing AA batteries from the device on first use - turns out it's easier to pull them up from the bottom (negative) side of the battery, slipping your finger under the middle of the battery.I do recommend this device, and it did recharge alkaline batteries in a few tests thus far. Just be advised it is a very slow trickle charger.

It's okay...It works, but it's just slow
I was not very impressed with this device. Does it work? Yes. How fast can in charge? My experience with chasing some rechargeable batteries was that it took a really long time (2 1000 mAh AAA batteries, only 40% charged after 5 hours. Better than nothing, it's nice it has the USB plug, but in a 2A wall outlet, it should charge much faster.Pros: USB connection means I can plug out into a solar charger, computer, or most of my phone chargers. It does work. It does charge normal alkaline batteriesCons: it's really, really slow (2x longer than my other charger takes).Unlike many of my reviews- I paid full price for this product.

Great idea!
This is a great product to have with your solar charger so when you are out hiking, camping, biking or just having fun, you can recharge your flashlight/headlight or your other devices batteries. I bring it as a battery back-up for a several day hike. I can recharge during the day and have fresh batteries at night. I have only used it on rechargeable Nimh batteries, not regular alkaline ones.

Broke
No way to tell if NiMH battery is full, but great alkaline battery chargerEdit: Changed to 1 star because it broke. It was within warranty but since it was concidered a hazard (hence why it's no longer for sale), I ended up getting a refund. It didn't even work too well in many cases anyway. It only worked ones used for Xbox controller batteries for some reason.

Not bad of a USB charger
Takes a long time to charge 2 AA batteries but for a USB charger, not bad. I have over 90 rechargeable batteries and this is my backup to my backup when it comes to charging. When I travel I also use this to "top off" my batteries during my flight.

Good for AA, not for AAAs
