Love this book, made a real difference
As a mid-50s, somewhat overweight, very out of shape person, I highly recommend this book. I tried to learn yoga about 10 years ago from videos online, but couldn't even begin to get my body into some of those postures. I thought that if I couldn't do them exactly right, I was doing them 'wrong' and therefore wouldn't get any benefit from it, and I gave up. I think the most important thing I got from this book is that that idea was wrong. This teacher (a yoga therapist) explains that it's perfectly okay to modify poses, and explains the best modifications to make to still benefit from the practice. So I felt encouraged to try again, even though I couldn't do all the poses in the traditional way. There is a whole section on yoga poses for particular areas where you might have problems (back, knees) or certain conditions (joint replacements, arthritis, etc). But my current favorite part is the section with specific whole body routines - three 5-minute routines, three 15-minute routines, and three 30-minute routines. I do the 15 minute ones, and alternate, doing a different one on each of my three days per week doing yoga. I love the variety. After only a few sessions, I definitely noticed improvement in how I felt, and how I could move. I can't remember anything else physical that I've tried and could see a noticeable improvement so quickly. When I'm doing my three sessions a week - even my heavily modified versions as a beginner - I have fewer aches and pains and less limited range of movement. If I skip a few sessions, I feel the difference, and look forward to getting back to it. It has motivated me to add other physical activities to my life, like walking and a light strength training routine. When you start feeling better, you start feeling like doing more.It helped me a lot, yoga is now a part of my weekly routine, I love it and definitely feel better. I would not have tried yoga again, or gotten these benefits, if it hadn't been for this book explaining how it's okay if you can't do the traditional poses perfectly, and it's okay to modify them.

Great coverage of a broad subject, readable for a lay public so accessible and useable.
I'm glad I got this book so I would do more yoga as I age (am 78, female). I know its good for me and this book encourages me to keep stretching because it tells me which routines are helpful (and which aren't) for what issues (ie., balance, back, sleep, etc.).

Slightly damaged but still worthwhile.
Just a little damage to the covers; rest of the book was fine. Would order again.

Addresses what I needed to know to get back into yoga
This book is an excellent source of information on the changes that occur with aging. It also helps you adjust your aging body to the different yoga poses. It also addresses different disease processes and how yoga can allieve pain and help with healing. An excellent source of information - I am already doing the poses and routines and am improving in my range of motion and overall health.

It's never too late to start...
Excellent book for beginners or aging practitioners. I bought an extra copy for my girlfriend and her teenage daughter is now doing yoga with her. Great!
