Surprising Sequel to a Great Book
I picked up the first book of this series (The Wind Singer) off the library shelf because I thought the cover looked cool. I was very surprised when I liked it as much as I did. Normally, when a book is that good, I do not go on to read the entire series, because often the first book is the best and it is down hill from there. I went ahead and broke that line of thought because I enjoyed the first one so much, and checked out Slaves of the Mastery from my library. I couldn't believe it: it was BETTER than the first book. That's never happened to me before. I have now bought the entire series and am reading through them again.I think that certain parts of this book could be a little scary for youngsters, because William Nicholson addresses all kinds of social issues (and not pretty social issues, at that), and there a couple battle scenes that are pretty graphic. It is a perfect young adult book, however, and I recommend it above any other young adult fantasy book I have ever read, including Harry Potter, and the Sabriel series (which was one of those series where the first book was REALLY good and the last two kept getting worse). In fact, there were parts that had me laughing out loud (the boy, Bowman, is very clever sometimes. The cat had me cracking up, too), and there were parts that brought me to the brink of tears. It is a hard call between this one and The Wind Singer for which is my favorite of the trilogy.

The Best Ever
This is the best children's book I've ever read - and I've read many hundreds of them. Long ago it was said of "The Lord Of The Rings" that "your life is the poorer if you have failed to read it." The same could be said of the "Wind On Fire" trilogy. If you're an adult (as I am) don't be turned off by the "children's" or "young adult" label. The plot and the relationships between the characters are full of deep philosophical and psychological currents - not that anyone would care much about those kinds of things if the book didn't also make you laugh and cry, and feel more alive after you finished reading it.

A worthwhile trilogy to read
I liked this book so well that I read all three books of the trilogy.

Five Stars
I absolutely adore this beautiful story. Full of adventure and a nice break from more pretentious novels.

All around nice series
My ten year old had just started to read Book one, and he is already half way through. He said it is really interesting. We got him book two and three also. So he can't wait to read all of them. He also said that it is weired so far, but nice and keeps him want to know more. I can see that they will all be interesting.

Good condition
This book was in good condition and the story is a family favorite. A bit more intense than The Wind Singer. Recommended.

gift
Since I purchased this as a gift, I did not read it myself and therefore cannot comment on the content.

Better than the first book!
I bought this book before finishing the first book (wind singer) thinking it continued the same story, then realising my mistake. It's new story revolving around the same people. It's a much better read and doesn't feel rushed like the previous book. There's more depth to the characters in this book and found the story much more interesting. Just started the final book.

If you like Phillip Pullman, read these books.
Such a lovely set of books - I have read and re-read these since I was a child. I liken them to the Phillip Pullman series. Please do read these books, you will not regret it I promise. They are haunting and touching with just the right amount of 'other world-ness'.

Captivating
amazing story, completely gripping until the last page. I wasn't sure that it would be as good as the first book, but it definitely is.

Lose yourself in this great fantasy adventure
This will make my 9 year old son very happy when he opens this from his grandparents at Christmas! We really enjoyed reading the Windsinger, the first in the trilogy at bedtime, but couldn't wait until the next evening to read more! Not surprised to see the next two books at the top of his Christmas list and looking forward to reading them with him. A great fantasy adventure I would recommend it for adults who like this genre too! Firesong (The Wind on Fire Trilogy) .
