Q: is the 2402 that much better than the 2401? I'm wondering if i should save money and just buy the older model?

2401-20 is lighter with only one speed setting 0-500rpm and 175 in lbs torque 15 settings 2402-20 is 2.0lbs with two speed settings and 300+ in lbs torque

Q: Will this item drill through wood? Or is it for screwdriving only?

Mostly to use as a power screwdriver, but you can buy individual 1/4" drive drill bits that are already adapted to this style chuck and/or a keyless check adapter for original style drill bits that will check up in this drill also, this drill does have a clutch with a drill setting on it which in turn would allow it to drill through wood also.

Q: Which one of these are the brushless one?

Only the M12 Fuel tools are brushless. In 12v you should always get brushless.

Q: Does this model have the varible speed trigger

To fully answer this question, this is a PWM motor with PWM controls. PWM means "pulse width modulated. The PCB board takes the input from the trigger and uses that as the percentage PWM that is sent to the motor. It uses a full 12 volts at all settings and speeds, however the length of time, referred to as pulse width varies. It will have full 12 volt power but the length of time in which the power is sent to the motor is varied, which comes out as a slow to fast turning motor which still delivers amazing power at any speed chosen from barely turning all the way to a ramped up 500 RPM. Control of the rotation rate and power are both controlled using the trigger. I have several of these for myself and my crews use.
