Balanced and thorough
Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" is a major classic in the field. Even though it is in ten volumes it is very readable. This particular volume was on Modern Philosophy, His treatment and analysis of the various philosophers throughout the ages is in depth and excellent. I was aware that he was a Jesuit, but he is clear about his positions and I did not find that it distorted any historical facts or known views of the various thinkers. For any serious student of philosophy it is well worth the effort to study the entire series.

Excellent philosophy book series.
These books were used in our seminary 1958-1960 and are excellent expositions of philosophers some of whom were very weird.

a helpful book for eighteenth century British philosophy
This book considers the British side to the Enlightenment, highlighting Hobbes, Newton, Locke, Berkeley and Hume. Many minor philosophers are also considered. The eighteenth century was a time when the scientific and technological revolutions were beginning to turn people to accommodating the new empirical and pragmatic elements that were becoming more important. There was more of an interest among philosophers in trying to see our basic philosophical inclinations in terms of biology and psychology. This was somewhat premature, as the huge advances we have seen in these fields came in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nevertheless, with Hume at least, we have a recognizably modern, psychological point of view in philosophy. Overall, Copleston addresses the development of British thinking during this time in a very lucid way, especially with respect to religious views. His treatment is very open-minded and tolerant, always with a view to trying to understand the perspectives of the philosophers. I highly recommend this book for beginning students of philosophy.
