Vintage Vonnegut
Haven't read Vonnegut for many years. To be honest it's a bit dated nowadays. But I enjoyed it all the same.

A very good collection
There are some great stories here. I'm afraid the ones included in the second half of the book are not as good, so overall it's not a perfect collection. But some of these stories are so good that they really make up for the weak ones. I strongly recommend it.

A Most Unpleasant Title Story
Vonnegut has been one of the most stimulating reads of my life. I simply thrive on the ideas, politics, humour and humanity to be found in his 14 novels but the title work of this book of short stories is unpleasant. It features a gang rape that is not portrayed with opprobrium. Not prurient but also not necessary. It originally appeared in Playboy. If this had been the first piece by Vonnegut I'd read it might well have been the last; and what delights I would have missed. Treat as an aberration, avoid and read his other works.

RIP KV
The idea of describing anything Vonnegut wrote as a 'pot boiler' is bizarre! This marvellous collection of fiction, essays and autobiography should accompany you through the rest of your life. I've been revisiting it regularly for 15 years or so. Vonnegut's prose is quirky and unusual, and deceptively simple (apparently a simplicity achieved by endless revision and honing), but always extremely thought provoking and wise. What impresses me most (and this is a quality of all his work) is his sound moral sense. He was one of the good guys, and I wish he were still with us.
