I loved Downton Abbey
I loved Downton Abbey. I have collected the books associated with each season of the TV show for the pleasure of continuing the experience. While I was sorry to see it end, I think it ended at the right time.As England became more industrialized, food production and cottage industries that flourished in the countryside were displaced by this phenomenon. The industrialization of England enticed women and men to move to the cities. This was caused by the fact that food production and cottage industries in the countryside disappeared, among other reasons. The Case in point: the young housemaid who leaned to type and moved on--to the amazement and disbelief of the staff. After WWI, young people flocked to the cities. Returning veterans often were not content to work on the land or be in service. The old order of the great houses and the land that supported the working and agricultural classes began to disappear as the landed gentry were not able to sustain that life style. Industrialization meant that fewer people were needed to produce the agricultural products. The terrible inflation in Germany became a springboard for the early nationalist organizations—the brown shirts, among others. The world moved toward WWII. The continued industrialization created more jobs not thought of before WWI. The wages were higher. Also, women in service--cooks, for example--could command higher salaries...and change jobs more easily. The books by Mary Powell, a maid who became a cook and worked many places, are a case in point. The twenties were a time of change, also. Women came to be accepted in professional jobs, not previously available. The old order was gone and the new order coming. I think it would have been difficult for Julian Fellows to continue the story as the staff was looking at other opportunities for their golden years. Without them, there was nobody to be downstairs.

Must have for any Downton Fan.
The book has beautiful photos and a lot of interesting information about the Series, and all the different locations that were used for Filming.Additionally, it gives you further insight into how people who were in service, & the Lord & his family lived at the turn of the 20th Century, & how the small villages supported the House. So much more information about the life of people living in this era. I have the book at hand, and I will read a bit about each character before watching it again on Netflix. I saw the Exhibition in November of 2019, at the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. It was Fantastic, they had recreated, most of the Kitchen, Carson & Ms Hughes offices, and the dining room for the servants.Lady Mary’s bedroom, and several other Key parts of the house using holograms. The costumes up close are a work of art. Buy this book.

Beautiful book
This is an exquisite collection of photos and information about the show, the actors, the setting, and behind the scenes looks that any fan will love. There is an episode guide that recaps each show. Well worth the money for this terrific book.

A great book for a great detailed 'soap opera'!!
I bought 2 of these as a Christmas gifts for my daughter and wife who are Downton fans - both of them love it!There were quite a few pictures - I had not seen most of them before. There is information about every episode and quite a bit about each character. The show is, quite simply, a 'soap opera'. But what a 'soap opera'!!! The detail in this is show is incredible and will give you a real feel for the time period of the early 1900's England. I'm not a huge fan but can appreciate the detail and care they have obviously put into this book (and the show in general!). You do need to keep in mind this book will give details about the (as of today - 1/8/16) mostly unaired 6th season. The price was under $19 including S&H. The book arrived quickly and in time for Christmas. It arrived in new condition. I would rate this a very good 8.75 to 9.25 out of 10.Almost any Downton Abbey fan will apreciate this book

The photos are beautiful and I especially enjoyed the character highlights and reading ...
I just received my book today. I turned every page. The photos are beautiful and I especially enjoyed the character highlights and reading the clever excerpts from memorable scenes. I could imagine the scenes all over again. My only disappointment is with the layout of two doublespreads, “At Home with The Family” (pages 10-11) at the beginning of the book and the final doublespread at the end of the book (pages 318-319). The publisher did not leave room for the gutters and in doing so, cut out The Dowager’s (Maggie Smith) left side and Robert Grantham’s (Hugh Bonneville) right side in the first doublespread and cut out Anna Bates (Joanne Froggatt) almost completely and the right side of Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle).

BEST SERIES EVER, BUY THE BOOK
I will cry when this season is over. I just had to have a memento. I feel like I've lived all there lives. Lets all hope for something to follow as GREAT as this series. Kudos to all the staff, creators, wardrobe and cast. I hope I haven't left anyone out. I do wish this book had been issued with a full accounting of season 6 which I thought I was getting but get it anyway. It will stay in my heart forever. I fell in love with everyone, we all lived their lives. This series deserves even more award than it received. I only wish for more but that's not to be. Let's just hope at least Edith is finally happy. I do think Bertie will come around. He just never gave Edith a chance to "come clean" in a suitable environment. I hope he thinks it over (as of 2/21/16 episode, S 6, E 8) Golly gumddrops.
