This book has been used for years in our university social work programs with students in field practicums. It provides great insight and a place to begin conversation as students delve into the complexities of helping relationships.

A real work geared for those serious about homiletics and systematic theology.

If you want a quick read with a few tips...
This book has some good qualities as it's quick to read, lays out some reminders on what makes others an ineffective listener, and in Chapters 9-10 gives good tips on how to correct negative behaviors in listening. Overall, though, this book is boring. Most of the information is not new and some of the terms she uses, such as soul listening, are just cheesy. There are better reads out there for effective listening.

If only we all read, understood, and applied the message of this book.
My wife and I read The Gift To Listen, The Courage To Hear together. We found it readable, interesting, and applicable. In our technological society, many people feel unheard. When we feel unheard, we feel not understood, and when we feel that we are not understood, we feel hurt. The hurt feeling leads to all sorts of social malfunction. We encourage people to read this good book carefully and set our on the journey of listening to others and hearing them. The author also encourages us to hear ourselves.
