Highly relevant history of this embattled part of the world
Highly researched and well written, this companion to 'When Man and Mountains Meet'gives a further in depth history to the tortured history, politics and personalities involved in the 19th century European, Russian and Chinese contact with the region. It gives ample scope for reflection as to the unlikelihood that its mores and institutions will comply with Western templates, and the futility of attempting to impose them.
