Solid Firesteel,
I rated this firesteel 4 stars due to its size and overall quality feel.Let me be clear to start with, I have what has been referred to as an "issue" with purchasing firesteels. I have more brands configurations, diameters (and even colors) than I can count. That being said, it does give me a unique cross section on which to base this review. Below is my personal opinion based on what I consider important, having the above mentioned "horde" of firesteels, and what I recommend a person look for in a quality firesteel.Too often with fire-starting kit, bad products are wrapped in pretty packaging and bright colors to induce the "oooohhh - shiny" reaction and faceted with numerous un-needed "extra" functions and trinkets to deflect attention from shoddy construction and poor design (think Jack of all trades - master of none). To create a level playing field for evaluation, the use of any "tool" can be seperated into just a few categories: Construction / Function as designed / Weight / ExtrasConstruction: Above AverageFiresteel to "handle" attachment is very secure. Diameter of the firesteel ensures LOTS of strikes (larger than most). Screw on cover is heavy-duty and threads easily. Bead chain lanyard leaves a little something to be desired, but the lanyard holes are large enough for para-cord to be used as a replacement. The striker is functional if nothing else, although the protective coating on the firesteel itself must firs be scraped off to throw an effective spark (this is the case with nearly EVERY other firesteel I have).Function as designed: AverageThrows a very healthy spark, relatively easy to hold on to due to the length and diameter of the rod. Striker does its job.Weight: Above AverageThis set-up is heavier than most, but adds to the robust feel.Extras: Above AverageAs stated above, extras can either be used to deflect attention from short comings, or to add to the overall package. In this case, it is the latter. While the screw-on rod cover may seem un-needed, I personally broken more than one firesteel by pushing a car or house door closed with my backside, and catching the rod in the jam (much forehead slapping ensued), the screw-on cover is robust enough to prevent this from happening. The striker includes a bottle opener, which is functional, and a neat extra, but not really easy to use or needed. The compass is..well...a tiny button type compass. I wouldn’t plot a 50 mile hike with it, and I’m sure it will be the first portion of the assembly to suffer an untimely demise, but my 8 year old son thinks it’s cool...Overall an above average piece of kit, at an average price. Can’t really go wrong..

It's an OK product; never buying this kind again though
Let me start off by saying this is not a terrible product, but it certainly has its flaws.I recently went on a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota, and I found this tool to be very useful. The compass was a great addon feature that I love, and used quite frequently, but the fire starter was sub par. Here are some short points of what I think of this:1. This particular striker never shot out a spark good enough to start a fire. I had to use my buddies FLAT striker to create a fire, every time. The strikers jagged round part was not sharp enough to spark out a good enough flame, and having a rounded striker makes your strikes less powerful. This point alone makes me never want to buy this product again, honestly.2. The flint handle is ridiculously small so if you're holding on with bare hands this will surely hurt. While you're frustrated, while getting a fire going, this doesn't help at all.3. This is quite a heavy fire starter / compass combo. Far too heavy in terms of competition.4. I question the need for a bottle opener for a survival item, but I'm sure hikers use it when they bring drinks along. That's pretty much the jist of this item in a nut shell. I will never purchase this product again knowing how terrible a rounded striker is, but I did get a LOT of use out of it overall.

seems to be well made, except for the compass
The compass doesn't work. Other than than, it seems to be well made.

It works good!
I have used fire starters in the past. Some have worked well while most were garbage. I was really impressed by the quality and functionality of this product. Not only does it have multiple tools in one, but the fire starter works quick. Even though I don’t use the fire starter tool every time, the accompanying gadgets are incredibly useful for everyday hiking trips. Overall quality is great (it’s not a flimsy product). I’m very satisfied and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
