An American Affair

according to her biographer Nina Burleigh "wore manners and charm like a second skin"
A missed opportunity. Gretchen Mol makes this movie work, but my goodness, did this movie miss a chance at telling a real story... Excerpt from Wikipedia:In 1983, former Harvard University psychology lecturer Timothy Leary claimed that in the spring of 1962, Pinchot Meyer, who, according to her biographer Nina Burleigh "wore manners and charm like a second skin",[23] told Leary she was taking part in a plan to avert worldwide nuclear war by convincing powerful male members of the Washington establishment to take mind-altering drugs, which would presumably lead them to conclude that the Cold War was meaningless.[55][56]According to Leary, Meyer had sought him out for the purpose of learning how to conduct LSD sessions with these powerful men, including, she strongly implied, President John F. Kennedy, who was then her lover. Leary alleged that Pinchot Meyer told him she had shared in this plan with at least seven other Washington socialite friends who held similar political views and were trying to supply LSD to a small circle of high-ranking government officials. Leary also claimed that Pinchot Meyer had asked him for help while in a state of fear for her own life after the assassination of President Kennedy. In his biography Flashbacks (1983), Leary claimed he had a call from Pinchot Meyer soon after the Kennedy assassination during which she sobbed and said, "They couldn't control him any more. He was changing too fast...They've covered everything up. I gotta come see you. I'm afraid. Be careful."[57]The movie is not about LSD, but the idea that the president of the US would have changed 'too fast', because of the mind-altering drugs a serious love interest gave him, now there's a story ...

Boring
Even with Gretchen Mol nude for a flash this has to be the most boring historically incorrect movie I've ever seen.

Gretchen great, but where are the bonus features?
The plot was awful, but Gretchen Mol was (as always) moving and beautiful. As others have pointed out, the language and behavior was not really credible for young teens in the early 1960s. (We did not drop f-bombs back then.) I deduct a star because the blu-ray I purchased is supposed to include bonus features (deleted scenes) but the menu on the disk provides no way to access them.

Interesting movie but I'm not sure how realistic the story is.
I am much too young to remember JFK as President or the assassination so I watched this movie to learn what reportedly happened while he was in the White House. His infidelity came as no surprise because Clinton proved the President should not be put on a pedestal, they are human just like everyone else. I would be interested in the REAL story of JFK's presidency but I doubt that story will ever be written. Overall the movie was interesting but I would have liked to see more about the First Family, warts and all. If you are interested in factual history, this is not the movie for you.Gretchen Mol played her part very well.

Not so 1963 ...
Entertaining story, being I would have been about the same age as Adam. Catherine, played by Gretchen Mol, is hot and sexy. Every young boy's crush. The funny stuff is back in 1963, kids didn't say "f off', "f you" like they do in this movie. We did play spin the bottle though. Second, when clearing the garden, tall paper yard waste bags didn't exist. We had trash cans, bushel baskets, and wheelbarrows for yard waste. That was a big faux pas. Lastly, when the young, inexperienced Adam is kissing Catherine on the couch, he reaches under her robe for between her legs like a veteran, not very realistic for a stumbling kid.

An overly sympethetic emotional lever used to try and move us away from decency.
A one-off story with a well traveled theme used as a narrative for the authors contempt for the Right, Religion, Conservatism, tradition, and traditional morality. The movie infers a narrative wherein there are only two camps to which all belong, one is all good and one is all bad. One whose sins are understandable and forgivable if not relateable, the other dark, sinister, and past redemption. In reality this movie lacked any white hats whatsoever and simply told an interesting story through the lens of corrupted youth.

great acting
I didn't pay much attention to the schoolyard stuff because the rest of it was so good. It's more like a generation coming of age after the obvious unfettered right wing power brokers that enjoy unchecked lies to run and ruin lies without interference for so long . I didn't get the right wing Kennedy haters sending their kids to Catholic school. The one thing I took away from the teenager was him asking his clueless dad, wasn't it his job to protect him? Right on. Kennedy was talking about disbanding the CIA at the time as well. One gunman my Aunt Fanny...conveniently shot shortly thereafter. The acting was great, it was all well done, engaging.

I was so interested I looked up information on the persons depicted in the film for a better understanding of what really happen
A very interesting film with information I never knew before. I was so interested I looked up information on the persons depicted in the film for a better understanding of what really happened. I think most people believe the CIA is deeply involved in the killing of President Kennedy and this is just another reason to solidify that belief.

It captures the true social and political atmosphere of the early 60s in the USA.
A faithful portrait of some aspects of life and politics of USA behind the happier facade. We can see through the characters, their worries, joys and hopes. Mol and all the others are perfectly cast in their roles. And what makes the movie complete is the right mix of exterior and interor scenes. I wish the movie a lot of success. To be viewed and savoured several times.

Strangely watchable
A slow burner with an unbelievable plot line but stangely watchable if only to see Miss Mol displayed in the height of 1960s fashions.

Lack Substance
Set in 1963 in Washington D.C this film is a coming of age or assassination plot movie. The film never really goes in any direction and fails to engage on any level. A lack of action or anything interesting makes this a hard watch for anyone. To be avoided.

Shades of truth
While this movie is fictional it is intermingled with historical references and was no doubt inspired by Marilyn Munroe's relationship with President Kennedy. It has a unique dimension of a young boy who becomes infatuated with the seductive Gretchen Mol and their relationship frames the movie. It is an interesting and very well crafted movie.
