Vinyl reissue of the most definitive Dirty Three album. Long out of print.Originally released in 1997, Ocean Songs plies the listener with tales of longing and weariness, although hope is just around the corner. Considered their magnum-opus by fans and critics alike and after many requests, Ocean Songs was performed by the band in its entirety at All Tomorrow's Parties New York in 2009.

Best Album ever
This album is perfection. It's songs build fluidly from one to another, reaching an incredible climax, and then bringing you to a place of release and relaxation. It is sensual, making you want to be as present as possible in your body. It has that moment that musicians reach so hard for, that moment where the music connects you to something greater. Coltrane did it. Dirty Three does it with this album too. Put it on. Move your body. And if you are so lucky, go see them live.

The Dirty Three play some of the most interesting music I've heard and Ocean Songs is a worthy addition to any music collection. Meditative (is that a word?) but never boring, the intricate weaving of electric violin, guitar and a drum style that is much more than simple time-keeping will transport your mind to different places. If you're ready for that adventure, plug in & get ready to be transported.

good music; unfortunate mixing
A violin, a guitar and drums meet, then swim about together in dreamy, liquid compositions. The music is fine, but the mixing makes it hard to really let it wash over you. The drums are miked too close while the violin is placed too far back. Rather than smooth violin work supported by twangy guitar and punctuated by percussion, we feel the tension of a misplaced element that throws the balance off. And here, balance is critical.

Great music to put on while you work or relax
Great music to put on while you work or relax. It doesn't invade your conscious world like most music can, and it can definitely put you in a creative/productive zone.

Five Stars
Fantastic album! If you like slow, droning, somber American music, this is one to get.

Sad Sea Songs
On this album, the Dirty Three showcase their most somber instrumental talents. Here, their music whispers across musical landscapes, somehow expressing more emotion than spoken words ever could. The music on "Ocean Songs" seems borne of a woolly, restless intoxication. It is a underlain with a kind of meandering sadness.Beginning with the most forward and ethereal melody on the entire album, the wispy song "Sirena" is easily one of the saddest pieces. Followed by "The Restless Waves" and "Distant Shore," all uniquely beautiful, vibrant, the first three songs are somehow tied together in their echoes of romance and despair. The music lives and breathes, and you become willingly captive, especially on the album's longer pieces, the sentimental "Deep Waters" and the ecstatic "Authentic Celestial Music." These songs, although rather indulgent, gain in emotional momentum right up to their end. "Ends of the Earth" calms the cumulative effect of the album with the beautiful addition of piano. The album, as a whole, is simply ethereal. It is a primal emotional energy that has been temporarily captured, but not tamed.Truly this is the saddest and most epic material recorded by the remarkable three-piece band. The slow, casual guitars and jumbled drums might merely fill interesting space were it not for Warren's love for the expressiveness of violin. What might otherwise have been noteworthy background music pulls you in, and slowly rolls you around in the murk, sometimes sad and screaming, other times calm and brooding.Key Songs: "Sirena," "The Restless Waves," "Authentic Celestial Music," "Deep Waters"

Evocative, unusual, but maybe something's not quite right?
The Ocean Songs CD arrived through the post accompanied by an (undated) clipping from the Telegraph Magazine with a review of The Dirty Three's work by Jessamy Calkin. Thanks Sis! The first track booms out, a striking confection evocative of folk melodies and the smell mof the sea, indeed a real pleasure. Track 2 is not dissimilar. In track 3 the concordant theme is fun, but the rest? By track 4 the CD seemed to have lost direction and frank tedium set in midway through track 5. In the Calkin review one reads that 'before the Dirty Three, Warrin Ellis [the violinist with the group] had only ever played in orchestras', while two paragraphs later Ellis learned Irish and Scottish folk tunes in Edinburgh and 'started playing in the streets and set up home in a whisky distillery' before returning, by way of Budapest, to Australia, where he met up with Jim White [percussion] and Mick Turner [guitar]. Not quite right? Back to the music. These three have got talent, that much is clear. There are problems with the recording levels of some tracks, the guitar is a little too sharp, and one wonders how much is improvised. Maybe The Dirty Three should go back and do it all again properly, exploiting their talent to the full, using original material and getting the recording just right. The blend of modern interpretation, folk tune and uncontrived dissonance generates an atmosphere that is new and unusual, if not frankly postmodern. Despite this, somehow the CD does not quite gel. But if you are ever stranded in a pub in Cape Town or Valparaiso, with no-one to wait for and nowhere to go, and need a little oblivion, this is the music.

Mournful and reflective
Music rarely gets much better than this. Mournful and reflective it rewards the listener time and time again. Warren Ellis and his band mates have come up with something that I will be listening too for the rest of my life.
