Snegurochka, also known as the Snow Maiden, didn't appear by Father Frost's side right away. However, even before the revolution, people used to decorate their Christmas trees with figurines of the elegant snow-white maiden, little girls used to dress up as Snegurochkas, and fragments from the play by Ostrovskiy and the opera by Rimskiy-Korsakov of the same name, were being performed during Christmas holidays by various theaters. In Soviet Russia the official celebrations of the New Year began in 1935. All around the country, various festive parties and events were being held and Father Frost would always be a welcome guest and host of those events. And all of a sudden, a lady appeared by his side - a wonderful and beautiful kind helper with a long braid over her shoulder, dressed in a blue sparkling fur coat. To begin with, Snegurochka was believed to be Father Frost's daughter - later on, for whatever reason, she became the "granddaughter". Since 1937 Father Frost and Snegurochka the Snow Maiden have always appeared side by side. Snegurochka entertains the kids, passes their gifts along, tells Father Frost their wishes, sings songs and dances with the kids, as well as forest birds and animals.
