The Master

One of Tsiu Hark's lighter movies but very enjoyable to watch
The Master was a film that had inadvertently passed me by when originally released on DVD by HKL. Maybe due to the fact that the cover of that release bared no resemblance to Jet Li portrayal in this enjoyable movie.Tsui Hark's script is rather basic (student turned bad wrecks havoc and it takes a sensei's good student to jump in to fight the good fight) but he handles this movie with good pacing, sprinkled with comedic highlights and some bloodshed. Yuen Wah, a very underrated actor in my opinion is very watchable and plays a solid supporting role to Jet Li, as does Crystal Kwok who becomes starry eyed over Jet Li's innocent being. Jerry Trimble excels as the bad guy with his mullet haircut who's descended to the dark side by wanting to take down any would be challenger or school perceived as a threat to his uprising. The rest of the cast are rather peripheral characters that don't add anything to progress the storyline. The BR transfer is very good with only a few areas of soft focus noticable. Watch out for Jet Li's magical hat! The release is supported by a series of good features. It was enlightening to hear about Yuen Wah and his time with Bruce Lee and his own upbringing. Crystal's involvement in the film industry starting when she was a student in LA was also interesting to watch.Packaged with this limited edition slipcover release is a A3 poster art which is very nice and printed on good stock paper along with what I believe to be lobby cards reprinted. The double sided reversible cover - one featuring the artwork with the other the original theatrical release poster.88 Films are getting stronger and better with each release. Keep up the good work. You're one of the leading companies to bring Chinese movies to justice on BR here in the UK.

Very Poor and No Booklet included as promised
I'm learning a few Hendrix songs at the moment and I wanted something to go with all the various free online resources. I thought this was going to be a good value purchase when I saw the 5 star reviews, however I was very wrong. The DVD format has been copied straight from a 1984 VHS tape so there is no index, just a great big long 40 minute chunk, a lot of which is film footage. The licks themselves are presented with minimum fuss which is good if only if you are an experienced player. There is also no 24 page booklet (tab) included as promised on the DVD cover. In summary, if you want some Hendrix lessons other than the free ones online, I'd say keep your money and spend it on something worthwhile like the How to Play Axis Bold as Love DVD, or some online paid courses. it may be a bit more expensive, but you will have a proper resource for learning whole songs, not just a set of licks. In 1984 I expect this was like gold dust, but we have much better resources available now, many for free.I would have increased my review rating if there was a tab booklet and the DVD had an index to access each lick one at a time, instead I will be returning the DVD.

Absolute rubbish
Golden Harvest took a basically promising idea for a script and ruined it, the acting is hopeless and the characters even worse - even the fight scenes cannot save this turkey of a movie and I am a fan of Jet Li but this is rubbish. I have watched this so-called film once and will not be repeating my mistake.
